Euro 2020: Top 5 Liverpool Players To Watch Out For

Liverpool had a poor 2020-21 season by the lofty standards they have set in recent years. Several from the Liverpool squad will be competing in Euro 2020 as well as Copa America this summer. Some of the Reds’ players will be key players for their national team and they will look to put aside their disappointing season to seek glory with their national side.

Here, we look at 5 Liverpool players to watch out for in Euro 2020.

Andrew Robertson

Scotland will compete in their first major tournament since the 1998 World Cup and one of their star men is Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson. Robertson will lead the side out as the captain of the Scots when they face the Czech Republic in their opening Euro 2020 game.

The Reds full-back will have more freedom to bomb forward from the left wing-back position. There was a golden opportunity for the Liverpool fans to see their two full-backs coming up against each other in the group stage, but the unfortunate injury to Trent Alexander-Arnold has ruled out any such possibility.

Jordan Henderson

Jordan Henderson could play an important role for England as Gareth Southgate has chosen a young English squad to play in Euro 2020.

The Liverpool captain returned from a muscle injury on the final day of the Premier League season, and his experience of playing in the high-tension games could be key come the knockout stages, provided England make it. Southgate prefers a cautious approach to games, and Henderson’s ability to control the midfield with his tenacity and distribution could complement the England attack.

With a star-studded attacking line, England will need the experience of someone like Henderson to see out games.

Diogo Jota

Diogo Jota was one of the few shining lights for Liverpool in the disappointing 2020-21 season. The 24-year-old joined the Reds from Wolves last summer and had a very good first season, scoring 13 goals in all competitions.

Jota has also been in good form for his national side, scoring three goals in his last three games for Portugal. The winger will play off the left for the European Championship holders and hope to be a threat with his speed, quick feet, and impressive finishing.

Xherdan Shaqiri

Xherdan Shaqiri played just a handful of games in the 2020-21 season for Liverpool, but the winger remains a key player for his national team, Switzerland. One of the senior members of the Swiss team, Shaqiri’s strength, passing, and experience will be vital for his national team.

Shaqiri has been used behind the two strikers for Switzerland and he will be required to create opportunities for the attack and also control the tempo of the game for his side.

Thiago

Spain will be one of the dark horses in Euro 2020 as they have lost just once in their last 11 games. Manager Luis Enrique has a host of star midfielders to choose from with the likes of Marcos Llorente, Rodri, Koke, captain Sergio Busquets, and Fabian.

Thiago may find it tough to get a start ahead of these star-studded midfielders, but following a strong end to his 2020-21 season with Liverpool, the former Barcelona player could perhaps be used in rotation by Enrique or an option off the bench.
