Liverpool are looking to sign Real Madrid centre-back Raphael Varane according to the latest reports.
Varane, who joined Real Madrid at the age of 18, will be out of contract in 2022. The 27-year-old centre-back, who scored twice for Real Madrid in their come from behind win against Huesca in their last game, is one of the most influential players in the Whites’ squad.
Varane’s contract extension talks with Real Madrid have not been taken place so far and this may give the impression that Los Blancos are ready to listen to offers for Varane next summer.
Liverpool who have been crippled by injuries so far this season, are looking to sign Varane as per Mirror.
However, it also depends on whether Zinedine Zidane stays at Real Madrid for the next season. Varane is one of the players who Zidane regards highly, and has rubbished rumours of the player leaving in the past.
If Real Madrid’s board does not reach an agreement regarding his extension within this summer, it will be clear that Real Madrid will try to sell Varane.
Signing Real Madrid’s Raphael Varane would be a statement of intent by Liverpool
For Liverpool, Raphael Varane would be a statement signing. It will show that the Reds want to come back strong next season as Manchester City are running away with the Premier League title this season. Klopp did say that there is no requirement for a “rebuild”, but he stated that there will be “little readjustments”.
Varane has seen it all; he won the World Cup with France, the Champions League — four times — with Real Madrid, and numerous league titles and cups with his club.
Liverpool have already brought in an attacking player in Diego Jota and a quality centre midfielder in Thiago, so, in order to fight for the title next season, they should really consider a big move for Varane.
The Real Madrid board have a big decision to make as the club are in a transition period and they can’t afford to lose their important players. Varane has been with the club since 2011 and he could be thinking about finding a new challenge.
At 27, he still has four to five years of topflight football in him at the very least. If the transfer goes through, Virgil van Dijk and Raphael Varane in the central defence could be a potential title-winning combination next season. The fans will certainly lick their lips with a prospect like that in sight.
