West Ham United are reportedly eyeing a swoop for Burnley defender James Tarkowski, as they look to strengthen their team.
The England international has been with the Clarets since 2016, having joined them from Brentford, and has become a key part of their side over the last four years.
As per Evening Standard, Hammers manager David Moyes is keen on strengthening his side’s defence by signing Tarkowski. West Ham United have already had a £30 million bid (including add-ons) rejected by Burnley for the 27-year-old central defender, who reportedly want a fee of £30 million without add-ons.
Tarkowski still has two years remaining on his current deal with Burnley. The English international has played twice for his national team, making his debut in 2018.
James Tarkowski to West Ham United – Will he fortify their defence?
West Ham United had a poor start to the 2020-21 Premier League season, falling to Newcastle United in their first game. While their attack lacked bite, their defence was heavily critcised by fans and pundits.
It is evident that the Hammers lack a strong and dominating leader at the back, which has been a malaise for quite a while. The experienced Angelo Ogbonna seems to have passed his sell-by date, while Issa Diop’s early promise has waned over the last season.
That’s why a leader and defensive rock like James Tarkowski could be a very good signing for the Hammers. Tarkowski is an old-school English defender who heads any and every ball that comes into the box, while also being a strong tackler. He is a leader at the back, who can organise the defence, put dangerous balls into the stands, and add some steel to the Hammers backline.
He has ample experience of playing in the Premier League and could make an immediate impact to this West Ham United team, who could be in danger of getting relegated if they continue to perform like they did against the Magpies.
Tarkowski’s experience could also help Diop develop further, who is just 23 years of age and could flourish under a more proficient and competent defender as Tarkowski.
The Hammers need a change, and it should start from the back with the signing of a strong and influential figure like Tarkowski.
