Why Newcastle United Have Struck Gold With Their New £15million Signing | Opinion

Newcastle United have completed the signing of left-back Jamal Lewis from Norwich City on a five-year deal for a reported transfer fee of £15million.

The Magpies have been pretty active in the transfer window this week as they have added a few fresh faces to beef up their squad ahead of the 2020-21 Premier League campaign that begins on Saturday.

Having already secured the services of Callum Wilson, Ryan Fraser, Jeff Hendrick, and Mark Gillespie, Lewis becomes the latest player to join Steve Bruce’s side.

Lewis was given permission earlier this week to leave the Northern Ireland camp before their game against Norway to complete his move to Newcastle United.

The left-back area had been a cause of concern for the Premier League side in recent times, so their new signing could be the solution to their woes.

Jamal Lewis – An all-action full-back who will solve more than one issue

Norwich failed to retain their top-flight status last season, but a few players in their squad impressed and perhaps deserve another go in the Premier League. Lewis is one of them.

A modern-day left-back who likes going forward, Lewis is good on the ball and will be a threat from the left flank. The 22-year-old is generally a cool and composed player and doesn’t make rash tackles, so he is a dependable player to have at the back as well.

Athletic and agile, Lewis is a good dribbler of the ball, and will be a great attacking outlet for the Magpies during the transitional phase of play, something Newcastle often rely on to catch the opposition off guard or out of position. Last season, Lewis managed 1.2 dribbles per game in the Premier League.

Paul Dummett, who has been frequently used as the left-back by Bruce, is undoubtedly a solid defender, but he does not offer an attacking threat, and has been plagued by injuries.

Lewis, on the other hand, is an astute crosser of the ball, and may be the ideal foil for the likes of Callum Wilson and Joelinton in the box.

In the 2019-20 league campaign, Lewis managed to make 22 appearances. He made 1.8 tackles and 2 clearances per game on average, and did well in a struggling Norwich City side. (Statistics Credits: Whoscored)

Of course, Lewis isn’t a finished article, and he will have to settle down at Newcastle United who have a different style of football when compared to Norwich City. Lewis has the ability to become a good top-flight player, and his addition to the team will help Newcastle in more than one area.
