Leeds United are keeping an eye on talented Dundee United defender Lewis Neilson, as per reports.
The Whites are looking to strengthen their squad ahead of their first Premier League campaign after 16 years, but Neilson would be more of a long-term acquisition considering his age and potential.
As per Dundee Courier, Leeds United scouts watched Neilson in action on Saturday when the Terrors faced Celtic. The 17-year old played at right-back against Celtic, and impressed with a solid display.
Neilson has impressed in the appearances he has managed for the side so far this season, and has shown his versatility in the process.
Neilson is also attracting interest from Crystal Palace, Leicester City, and Southampton, as the clubs had their scouts present for Dundee’s clash against Celtic as well.
Lewis Neilson – A player with a lot of potential
Leeds United will have to play it smart in the transfer market, and rely on scouting and players who will offer value for money, considering they can’t match the top sides’ big pay pockets.
Although squad depth is a concern, Leeds need to strengthen their first team, or sign players with potential who can step up and make the jump to the first team in the coming years. Neilson is one such player.
The 17-year old started off as a defensive midfielder, but showed good attributes that could be made use of at the back. Neilson has good strength and physical attributes, and could become an imposing figure at the back if he keeps up his development.
His versatility could also hold him in good stead, as he can play as a full-back. The teenager is quick enough to make the marauding runs up the flanks, or trackback and make the recovery tackles.
Marcelo Bielsa does not shy away from handing the younger players opportunities if they are good enough. This could possibly help Leeds beat their competition as Neilson is still young, and will need good managing if he moves to the Premier League.
Dundee are reportedly looking for a seven-figure offer to let go of the talented defender, so it remains to be seen if Leeds United will fork that kind of money for a player with only a handful of Scottish Premiership appearances.
Perhaps waiting and scouting Neilson further will help alleviate any lingering doubts if he can make in the Premier League, but there is always the risk of him moving elsewhere.
