There have been reports suggesting that Chelsea are considering Brazilian star Gerson, who plies his trade at Flamengo, as a potential midfield option in the summer transfer window.

Chelsea boss Frank Lampard has been doing brilliant business as he has already roped in Hakim Ziyech from Ajax while personal terms with RB Leipzig forward Timo Werner has also been agreed as per many reports. Now, according to Express, Chelsea’s transfer chief Marina Granovskaia has set her sights on Gerson to increase competition in the midfield.

The Flamengo star, with his solid performances for the club, has also drawn interest from Germany in the form of Borussia Dortmund. Not only this but Jose Mourinho’s Tottenham Hotspur are also monitoring Gerson as an option ahead of the next season.

Flamengo are said to have rejected a £16 million bid for their 23-year-old midfielder from an unknown Premier League club last week as they reportedly want £30 million for him.

Gerson: Is he a viable option right now for Lampard?

Having potentially paid around at least £87 million for Hakim Ziyech and Timo Werner to bolster their attack, splashing out £30 million for Gerson would not be a sensible move from the Chelsea boss. It is not a great spot from Marina Granovskaia because there is already enough competition in the Blues midfield and it would be quite tough for Gerson to find even minimum game time at the Bridge.

The Chelsea central midfield currently comprises of players like Mason Mount, Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Mateo Kovacic, and Ross Barkley all looking to sweat it out day and night to get first-team action alongside Kante and Jorginho. Gerson would be nothing more than a benchwarmer at Chelsea until and unless he turns up with miraculous performances once given the opportunity, something which cannot be considered while scouting a target.

Talking about the form of the current Chelsea midfielders, Mason Mount and Mateo Kovacic has been at their absolute best this season playing a pivotal role in their recent joy under Lampard. Ruben Loftus-Cheek has been out with injury since the Europa League final in Baku but his form and contribution last year under Sarri was nothing short of scintillating.

Speaking of Ross Barkley, the England International’s downgoing career was handed a new life when he joined Chelsea from Everton. Despite some pains in his initial days, the midfielder has lately struck form with dominant performances against Liverpool and Everton.

In such a competitive scenario, Gerson would find life tough at Chelsea in spite of his high levels of concentration and ability to provide threatening through balls. His trajectory has been on the up till now in his career but a move to an elite club with enviable squad depth is not the right option for him right now. A possible future move should surely be on the cards though, given his undeniable potential.
