Wolves Eyeing A Bold Swoop For Real Madrid Star: A Good Fit Under Nuno?

James Rodriguez

Premier League side Wolves could reportedly make a bold move to sign Real Madrid attacking midfielder James Rodriguez in the next transfer window.

Wolves, who are currently in contention for the Champions League places, have had a strong season, both in the domestic league and the Europa League.

As per Marca, several Premier League clubs are in the race to sign the Colombian. Apart from Wolves, Everton and Arsenal are also interested in signing the 28-year-old.

The report states that there’s a possibility of Rodriguez could join Everton, and reunite with Carlo Ancelotti, who previously managed the Colombian at Real Madrid.

The Wolves link is due to Rodriguez’s agent, Jorge Mendes, who has close ties with the club, which has resulted in several promising players joining the club over the last few seasons.

Rodriguez has started just four league games this season, making a total of 13 appearances in all competitions this season. His current deal with Madrid expires in 2021 and it’s unlikely he will be offered a new deal.

James Rodriguez – A good fit under Nuno?

Wolves have proved their doubters wrong by having yet another impressive season after finishing seventh last season. Manager Nuno Espírito Santo has built an exciting, young squad who have done well in the Premier League and the Europa League.

A player like James Rodriguez at Wolves would be a great lift for the club, who have made some shrewd signings in the last few transfer windows.

Rodriguez is a clever player who likes to play between the lines and thread balls into the final third from his attacking midfield role. He is technically solid, being potent from set-pieces, free kicks, and can shoot from distance every now and then as well.

He is a decent dribbler who is capable of playing out wide apart from the role behind the striker. Wolves play a system that employs three central defenders with two wing-backs, two central midfielders and three attackers.

In Wolves’ current system, Rodriguez would not fit in anywhere, apart from the wide right position, which has been occupied by Adama Traore, who has been in sensational form this season.

The Wolves manager could probably tweak the system to play just two strikers up top – Traore and Raul Jimenez, with Rodriguez providing the service. They could be even deadlier in the counter with a good passer like Rodriguez in midfield.
