We are 25 games into the 2019-20 Premier League season, and it’s quite certain that the league title will go to Liverpool. The Reds have broken away from the chasing pack and are already 22 points ahead of 2nd placed Manchester City.
But while the title seems to be done and dusted, the race for the fourth spot and the relegation scrap remain as entertaining as ever.
After 25 games of the season, there have been a few star performers that have stood out from the rest.
Let’s take a look at the MAEPL Premier League team of the season so far
Goalkeeper
Martin Dubravka: A surprising name to be a part of the Team of the Season so far is Newcastle United’s Martin Dubravka, who has made more saves (103) than any other keeper this season, while also keeping 8 clean sheets – one less than the most in the league this season.
Defence
Trent Alexander-Arnold: Liverpool’s young right-back, Trent Alexander-Arnold, has taken the Premier League by storm this season, after a superb 2018-19 campaign. The 21-year-old’s exquisite crossing ability has resulted in 10 assists in the league this season – the second highest so far.
Virgil van Dijk: Liverpool have conceded just 15 goals in 25 games this season – the best defensive record in the league. One of the chief reasons for their dominance at the back is the form of Virgil van Dijk. Liverpool’s upturn in form over the last three years coincided with the signing of van Dijk, who is good in the air, a leader at the back, and initiates attacks with his composed passing.
Caglar Soyuncu: Leicester City have been one of the surprises of the 2019-20 Premier League season, and one of their star players of the season has been defender Caglar Soyuncu. The Turkish international has formed a great partnership with Jonny Evans at the back and has been a commanding figure for the Foxes.
Andrew Robertson: Another Liverpool player, Andrew Robertson, makes it to the defence of this team at left-back. Like Alexander-Arnold, Robertson is an attacking full-back, who likes to bomb forward. His tremendous work-rate and clever crosses have made him the best left-back in the league.
Midfield
Kevin de Bruyne: Perhaps Manchester City’s best player this season, Kevin de Bruyne has racked up a whopping 15 assists in 24 games for City, while also scoring 7 goals.
James Maddison: James Maddison showcased a little bit of what he is capable of last season for Leicester City, and he has taken it up a few notches this season. The attacking midfielder has formed a good partnership with Wilfred Ndidi and Youri Tielemans in midfield, scoring 6 goals and assisting 3 more this season.
Mohamed Salah: It was a toss-up between Mohamed Salah and Wolves’ Adama Traore for the right-sided place in this team, and Salah just about edged it. The Egyptian has 14 goals and 6 assists in 22 league games this season and is the Reds’ leading goalscorer in the 2019-20 season.
Marcus Rashford: Manchester United have had a poor 2019-20 season, and the only bright spot of their season has been the form of Marcus Rashford. The 22-year-old Englishman is the Red Devils’ chief threat in attack, scoring 14 goals and providing 4 assists in 22 league games.
Attack
Jamie Vardy: Another Englishman who has had a fantastic season so far is Leicester City’s, Jamie Vardy. The 33-year-old is the leading goalscorer in the league this season with 17 goals and he also has 4 assists to his name, in 23 league games.
Danny Ings: The second striker spot in this team was tough to choose as the likes of Sergio Aguero, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, Tammy Abraham, Raul Jimenez and Roberto Firmino have all had fantastic seasons.
But, Danny Ings makes it to the list as he’s part of a team that struggled this season but turned things around, which he played a big part in.
The former Liverpool striker has scored 14 goals in the league this season, helping the Saints to move away from the drop zone to mid-table.
