Newcastle United have time and again introduced some exciting talent to the Premier League, irrespective of their position in the league table.
The latest name that they are interested in, that could make a serious mark on the league is defender Omar Colley.
The Chronicle Live have picked up a story from the Italian press that claim that The Magpies are set to open talks with Sampdoria, over a move for Colley this January.
But who is Colley and what has Bruce seen in him?
Omar Colley And His Style Of Play
Having spent time in Finland and Belgium, the Gambian international moved to Serie A in 2018 and made an immediate name for himself at Sampdoria.
He was a regular in the first team last season, making 21 league appearances, and has already notched up 16 league starts this season.
Playing alongside the likes of Alex Ferrari and Jeison Murillo, the 27-year-old has acted as the leader for the backline, putting in a number of impressive performances, even against the toughest sides in the country.
A no-nonsense defender by trait, Colley is a strong and smart operator, who rarely misses a tackle or a chance to intercept a pass.
Omar Colley is adept at dominating his box, rarely allows strikers to get on the end of the crosses but is equally impressive in one-on-one situations.
He has 12 international caps for Gambia and is an experienced campaigner who is currently in his prime as a footballer.
His ability to read the game along with his decision making make him a serious defender, who will be a good fit for the English side.
Right Fit For The Magpies?
The same story also claims that Steve Bruce might be more interested in attacking reinforcements this month, and it is understandable if Newcastle United do not move forward with this deal.
The likes of Jamaal Lascelles and Fabian Schar have formed a strong partnership at the back while Federico Fernandez, Paul Dummett, Ciaran Clark and Florian Lejeune have all been used in this role.
Schar, Clark, Dummett and Lascelles have all picked up niggles recently but are expected to back in training before they face Wolves this weekend.
So it makes very little sense for Bruce to spend on another central defender when there are other areas of the squad that need strengthening.
However, if they do insist on buying another centre-back, the 27-year-old Gambian could be a decent bet.
