German Star Open To January Exit: Should Premier League Clubs Make A Move?

emre can

Former Liverpool star Emre Can has not been able to settle into life in Italy.

Just a year and a half after quitting Anfield, the German midfielder is set to hand in a transfer request this January, according to several stories in the media.

He was excluded from Juventus’ Champions League squad for the rest of the season and Can seems to have decided to search for game time elsewhere.

The likes of PSG are already interested in his services but should Can’s experience in the Premier League see English clubs scout for his services?

Emre Can: What Does He Offer?

A versatile central midfielder, who is decent across the backline as a makeshift option, Can is a technically gifted player, effective in transitional play.

He is strong in retaining possession under pressure and is also adept at setting up chances in the final third.

His late runs into the box allow him to be a goal-scoring threat as well but he is at his best playing as a part of a two-man midfield, where he can control the game.

At just 25, Can has 25 appearances for the national side but has struggled for game time this season.

His robust approach to the game and the ability to turn defence into attack makes him an exciting prospect for many teams in Europe.

Lack of concentration was an issue even in his time at Liverpool but regular game time in a system that suits him could turn Emre Can into a world-class midfielder still.

English Clubs That Should Make A Move

Can’s versatility makes him a smart option for both Manchester clubs but the midfielder may not be open to joining clubs with restricted game time.

Manchester City are a bit lightweight in central defensive midfield or will be in the coming seasons with Fernandinho nearing the end of his career in England and Ilkay Gundogan nearing 30.

Rodri is there for the long-term but a partnership in midfield or even as a competition can be an enticing prospect for Emre Can and Manchester City if Pep can work his magic on someone like the German, who quite clearly has untapped potential.

Manchester United, on the other hand, are in genuine and urgent need of a player in a similar mould. McTominay and Fred have impressed in patches and the lack of depth also calls for further reinforcements.

Jose Mourinho, who wanted Can in his time at Old Trafford, may be tempted to bring him to London while the likes of West Ham United and Crystal Palace, both of who are in search of a central midfielder, could also be attractive projects for the 25-year-old.

At London Stadium and at Selhurst Park, Can will be a first-team player, and could be the man running the game for his side from the middle of the park.

He does have the experience and technical ability to win games for such sides in the Premier League. But interest in his services from clubs like PSG will leave little chance for both London clubs.

His former side Liverpool, who are also short of defenders, may be tempted to bring him back to Anfield. Can adds stability to the midfield if needed and could provide the depth that can help Liverpool win more than one competition, come the business end of the season.

Emre Can is potentially a world-class midfielder and could be a huge addition in January, for even the biggest clubs in England.
