Aston Villa Linked With A Transfer For Spanish Star: Shrewd Move In The Offing?

Aston Villa are reportedly interested in signing Chelsea winger Pedro in the January transfer window.

The Spaniard, who has been with the Blues since 2015, could move away from the London club as his contract is set to expire at the end of this season.

According to Telegraph, the newly-promoted side are interested in the 32-year-old who has won a Premier League, FA Cup and Europa League with the Blues. Villa could make a move for him in January and sign him on the cheap as his contract expires in the summer.

Pedro has made just 4 league starts this season for Chelsea, four further appearances in other competitions.

Since joining from Barcelona in 2015, the World Cup-winning winger has made nearly 200 appearances for the Blues, scoring 42 times and making 26 assists.

What will Pedro add to Aston Villa?

Aston Villa have had a mixed first half of the Premier League season in their return to top-flight football. Dean Smith’s side are 17th in the table and are in a relegation battle despite putting in some good performances this season.

There have been some promising performances from the likes of Jack Grealish, John McGinn, and Tyrone Mings, but they need more quality and experience if they want to stay in the league.

A signing like Pedro could make Villa a lot stronger than they currently are as he has vast experience and is a technically gifted player. The former Barcelona winger is quick and skilful, and would be a useful player on the right side for Villa.

While the addition of a player like Pedro would give them a better chance of staying up, it would be a huge gamble as he has not played much this season, and didn’t have a big impact on the Chelsea side last season. He will come with big wages, which may be a problem if Villa go down.

Villa also have two good right-wingers in Anwar El Ghazi and Trezeguet, while Jota also impressed in the few games that he played.

A winger is not a priority for Villa at the moment.  What the Villans need is a goalscoring striker, who can offer competition to current striker Wesley. However, if Smith can integrate Pedro as a false nine, he that could be a bonus as he has previously played in that role for Barcelona.
