Newcastle United Linked With Champions League Winner: He’d Add More Quality To The Attack

Real Madrid reportedly want to let go of winger Lucas Vázquez in the January transfer window, and Newcastle United are one of the clubs interested in signing him. The Magpies need some reinforcements as their squad is currently pretty thin.

According to El Desmarque, Madrid are going to sell Vázquez while Mariano Díaz is another player who could leave the Santiago Bernabéu.

Newcastle United, West Ham United and Wolves are the clubs interested in signing the Spanish attacker. Vazquez has fallen out of favour this season, and has dropped down the pecking order under Zinedine Zidane.

Vazquez, who has been part of the squads that won the Champions League thrice and La Liga once, has made over 190 appearances for the Spanish giants, scoring 22 goals and 45 assists.

The Spaniard has also played 9 times for his national team. His contract with Madrid expires in 2021, having signed a five-year deal in 2016.

Vazquez Would Add More Quality To The Newcastle Attack

Vazquez is no longer a key part of the Madrid squad as the likes of Gareth Bale, Rodrygo, and Vinícius Júnior ahead of him in the pecking order. The 28-year-old has to move to get first-team football and it seems like Madrid do not want him either.

Newcastle United certainly need more quality going forward as their forwards haven’t contributed with too many goals. Their top goalscorers are central defender Ciaran Clark and midfielder Jonjo Shelvey, while left-back Jetro Willems has the most assists this season.

The addition of Vazquez would add quality in attack thanks to his confident dribbling and through balls, and would perhaps be a better option than the misfiring Miguel Almiron – who is yet to score since moving to St James’ Park — on the right.

Vazquez’s work-rate would be a good addition to the Newcastle side, who often sit deep and hit teams on the counter.

But, could Newcastle afford the wages of a Real Madrid player? That remains to be seen. At 28 years of age, he is an experienced professional who has won it all in Spain, and perhaps would love this challenge of playing in the Premier League.

If Madrid want to get rid of him, they may not want a big transfer fee, which could convince the Newcastle hierarchy to pursue him.
