Midfield Lynchpin To Return | Predicted 4-2-3-1 Manchester United Lineup vs Aston Villa

Manchester United return to Premier League action on Sunday when they play Aston Villa, after their long trip to Kazakhstan where they faced Astana in the Europa League.

Manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rested a majority of his senior players as a second-string United side consisting of several teenagers featured in the 2-1 loss to the Kazakh side.

United host Villa for the first time in three years, after only getting a draw against another newly-promoted side in Sheffield United last weekend in the league.

The last time these two sides met at Old Trafford in 2016, the hosts got the win, thanks to a goal from Marcus Rashford.

Manchester United Team News

There is some positive news regarding the fitness of midfielder Scott McTominay, who missed last weekend’s league game as well as the mid-week game due to an ankle injury.

Solskjaer revealed that the Scottish international could return for Sunday’s game, but Paul Pogba is not fit enough yet.

Defenders Marcos Rojo and Eric Bailly are out of the game as well, while Nemanja Matic could possibly return to the squad.

Let’s take a look at the possible Manchester United lineup for the game against Aston Villa:

Predicted Manchester United Lineup vs Aston Villa

Goalkeeper

David de Gea and Sergio Romero were not involved in the mid-week game. De Gea should return to the Manchester United lineup come Sunday.

Defence

Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelöf, Phil Jones, Ashley Young, Aaron Wan-Bissaka, and Brandon Williams were all rested for the Europa League tie.

We could see Solskjaer revert to a four-man defence and not play the three-man defence that he did last weekend against Sheffield United.

Maguire and Lindelof should start as the two centre-backs, while Wan-Bissaka and Williams should start at right-back and left-back, respectively.

Midfield

If McTominay is fit, he will go straight into the Manchester United lineup, playing alongside Fred. Andreas Pereira played in central midfield last time around, and he and Fred were outnumbered in the first half.

This time he will probably play further forward in the No. 10 position. If McTominay is not fit, we could see Pereira drop into midfield or Nemanja Matic start.

Attack

We could see the same attack from last weekend, featuring Marcus Rashford from the left, Anthony Martial through the centre, and Daniel James on the right, completing the Manchester United lineup.
