In what is one of the biggest stories since the end of the transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur are now looking at former Chelsea and Manchester United Jose Mourinho, as a potential replacement for Mauricio Pochettino.
According to a story from French website Soccerlink, the club are expected to part ways with the Argentine at the end of the season, and they have already contacted the Portuguese manager over this job.
But is Mourinho the right man for Spurs?
Jose Mourinho’s Recent Criticism
Having won league titles in Spain and England, along with a Europa League title with Manchester United, Mourinho still managed to get the sack in each of his last three assignments as a manager.
He was deemed not good enough for Real Madrid, lost the dressing room at Chelsea and regressed at Manchester United, losing his job on each occasion, mid-way through his contract. Currently working as a pundit, he has not managed a club since December.
In the last few seasons, his pragmatic approach to the game has often seen him face a lot of criticism. Irrespective of his short-comings, Mourinho remains one of the most decorated managers in world football.
Would Mourinho Be A Good Fit For Tottenham?
The Portuguese manager has already proven himself with the likes of FC Porto and Inter Milan, where he won titles with a system that seems to have been found out recently.
However, when given the tools he wants, Mourinho is capable can shape a team to win titles, which is something Spurs desperately need after going close so many times in the last few years.
As much as they have improved under Pochettino, Spurs are yet to win their first trophy of this decade. They are still probably the third-best squad in the top flight in England but lack the experience or the mentality needed to go all the way.
This is where Mourinho could make a huge impact at the club.
The 56-year-old may not be able to produce eye-catching football that Pochettino wants his side to play, but Mourinho will definitely have the current squad at the club compete for trophies.
Daniel Levy has allowed Pochettino to spend big earlier in the summer and if Mourinho is given the same freedom, there is very little that he can’t achieve.
If Pochettino deserves another year with the club is a debate for another piece but if they do end up relieving him of his duties, there are very few managers in Europe better suited to change the image of Tottenham Hotspur.
His recent troubles do not give a glowing account of his abilities but Mourinho is certain to have an impact on the squad that will help them in the long run.
