Manchester United are in disarray at the moment, struggling in all competitions in the 2019-20 season under manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Under Solskjaer, the club sold a few big-name players in the summer, but did not replace them. Subsequently, the Red Devils have struggled, and find themselves just two points above the relegation zone.
Fans and pundits backing Solskjaer have said that he needs 3-4 transfer windows to be seriously competitive with the current United squad, but it remains to be seen if the Norwegian will last that long, especially if results go the way they are going now.
Manchester United will need to bring in a few players in the January transfer window, but they will also have to get rid of some of their underperforming ones.
Let’s take a look at 3 players Manchester United need to get rid of in January:
3 players Manchester United should sell in January
#3 Marcos Rojo
Defender Marcos Rojo is an Argentina international, having played 60 times for his national team, and is an important player for the South American team. But, Rojo hasn’t been that impressive at Manchester United since joining the club in 2014.
Rojo, who can play as a centre-back or a left-back, has been inconsistent, rash, and loses concentration often.
The 29-year-old was linked with a move to Everton in the summer transfer window, but that deal fell through which meant that Rojo was to be a bit part player, playing mostly in the Europa League and League Cup.
He revealed in an interview with Ole that he may have to reconsider his future at Old Trafford in January if he doesn’t get enough chances.
Rojo hasn’t improved or come anywhere close to being the first-choice at Manchester United in the last season or two, and it is time to move him on.
#2 Phil Jones
Phil Jones is another player who has been at the club for far too long. Jones is the longest-serving player at the club along with David de Gea, but hasn’t lived up to the expectations and the potential that many thought he had.
Jones, like Rojo, has been inconsistent, and has been hit with several injuries over the last few seasons.
He is way down the pecking order, with the likes of Harry Maguire, Victor Lindelof, Axel Tuanzebe, and even Marcos Rojo, ahead of him.
#1 Fred
Fred arrived at Old Trafford last season for a massive fee of around £47 million, but hasn’t quite adapted to the rigours of the Premier League.
The Brazilian has not shown what he is truly capable of, and even after one full season at the club and in England, he has struggled.
United fans don’t quite know what Fred offers on the pitch as he has not passed the ball well, neither has he been a defensive option.
The club should cut their losses and let Fred go, and bring in at least two quality central midfielders in the January transfer window.
