Rashford flops while James impresses: Man United player ratings in 1-1 draw vs Southampton

southampton lineup

Despite bagging an early lead through Daniel James’ thunderous strike, Manchester United returned from St. Mary’s with just a single point.

Jannik Vestergaard levelled the scoreline for Southampton and made it 1-1  after the break. Although Southampton were a man down following Kevin Danso’s red card, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s troops failed to make the most of it.

Manchester United Player Ratings vs Southampton

David de Gea 6/10

The Spaniard made a great reflex save to deny Danny Ings, only to be beaten by Vestergaard’s header just a few seconds later.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka 7/10

Wan-Bissaka dazzled down the right once again and dealt with Sofiane Boufal in a meticulous manner.

Victor Lindelof 6/10

The central defender took time to settle down and was poor during the aerial duels, something he needs to work on.

Harry Maguire 7/10

Maguire was solid at the back without being spectacular. His passing is improving every week. He made 1 tackle and won 3 aerial duels.

Ashley Young 7/10

Playing at left-back, Young was energetic down the flanks and linked up well with his offensive teammates, although his crossing accuracy has become wayward in recent times.

Scott McTominay 7/10

The young gun was commanding in the middle of the pitch and was the engine room for his side. He launched himself forward time and again to create chances and bagged an assist.

Paul Pogba 5/10

It was another forgettable outing for the French international as he couldn’t really make his presence felt. He saw a lot of the ball but made very little use of the possession.

Andreas Pereira 6/10

Pereira toiled relentlessly on the pitch and pressed really hard. However, he lacked an end product.

Juan Mata 7/10

With a pass success rate of 87%, the veteran attacking midfielder pulled the strings well enough. He started to fade during the second half and was rightfully substituted.

Daniel James 8/10

Thanks to James, Cedric Soares could hardly settle in the game. The young gun was a livewire with his speed, work-rate and tenacity, and scored a stunning goal to give his side the lead.

Marcus Rashford 4/10

The striker failed to take a number of chances which fell his way and looked bereft of confidence. His first touch was awful and he never posed a serious threat to Vestergaard and Jan Bednarek.

Substitutions

Nemanja Matic 6/10

Matic brought solidity into Manchester United’s midfield but there remains question marks on why he was introduced with United chasing a result.

Jesse Lingard 6/10

With his introduction, Solskjaer’s side got the energy which had started to wear off but he was wasteful in the final third.

Mason Greenwood 6/10

Greenwood forced Angus Gunn to make a save after a brilliant strike late in the game. Should have been brought on earlier.
