Leeds United Eyeing A Move For Versatile Defensive Ace: Detailed Scout Report

Sam McCallum

Leeds United are reportedly interested in 19-year-old full-back Sam McCallum, who currently plays for League 1 side Coventry City.

The left-back joined the side in 2017 and has gone on to become an important part of the League 1 side, and as per Coventry Telegraph, Marcelo Bielsa’s side are keeping an eye on him.

McCallum has started 4 games and made one substitute appearance for the League 1 side this season, while also making two appearances in the EFL Cup. The left-back signed a new contract with the club earlier this year which expires in 2022.

Leeds’ current left-back options are Ezgjan Alioski and Barry Douglas, while 19-year-old Leif Davis is another option for Bielsa.

Let’s take a look at Sam McCallum and his strengths and weaknesses in this scout report:

Strengths

McCallum is a modern full-back who likes to go up and down the flanks, and offers something in attack whenever he is up the pitch. The teenager is quick with or without the ball, and closes down opponents and robs them of the ball thanks to his pace and energy.

The full-back has made an average of 1.4 interceptions per game this season. He began his career in midfield, and has shown qualities that a midfielder possesses, which is a bonus at left-back.

McCallum is a good blocker of the ball, and he also averages 3 clearances per game, showing that defending is his first priority. The youngster is also good at moving the ball forward quickly with his long balls, averaging 2.8 long balls per game, and has averaged 32.8 passes per game in League 1 this season.

The left-back, who was a part of non-league side Herne Bay FC last year, has also played at right-back this season, showcasing his versatility. The youngster has a lot of potential and could develop into a solid player in the future.

Weaknesses

One major weakness in McCallum’s play is his tackling, which needs improving. This season, he has won an average of 0.8 tackles per game, which is not good enough. He also gives away cheap fouls and has committed an average of 1.8 fouls per game this season.

Verdict

McCallum is an exciting talent, but he needs to be groomed and developed and can certainly not be thrown into the Leeds first-team anytime soon. He could be a long-term replacement for first-choice left-back Barry Douglas.
