Liverpool and Barcelona to battle it out for Bundesliga fullback: A no-brainer for Klopp

liverpool

European Champions Liverpool seem to be happy with the squad at their disposal and are biding their time in the transfer market this summer.

But they are looking to add depth to their squad and Bundesliga star Philipp Max is catching the eye of the English club, claim reports from Spanish news outfit Sport.

Also wanted by Barcelona, Max has racked up impressive numbers in Germany for more than a couple of years now and will only cost around €20m.

So should Klopp hijack Barcelona’s move for the FC Augsburg man?

Philipp Max And His Numbers

Having started his senior career with Schalke, the 25-year-old moved to WWK Arena in 2015 and has been one of the first names on the team sheet for the club ever since.

He led the chart for assists in the Bundesliga the season before the last and registered four goals and two assists in 30 league starts last season.

Known as an ultra-attacking full-back, the 25-year old can also play as a winger and is lauded as one of the best crossers of the ball in the German top flight. He is consistent with his set-piece delivery while his technique and vision to set up his teammates on goal make him a dangerous player to deal with for the opponents.

He loves to spam crosses into the box but is also adept at playing short passes just outside the box, waiting for the right time to create a chance.

However, Max has been constantly criticised for his lack of defensive contributions. He is not strong in the air, has lapses of concentration at the back and against quality sides, can easily be exposed.

But at 25, he has over 100 Bundesliga appearances and could be a decent coup for the English club.

A no-brainer for Klopp?

Having allowed Alberto Moreno to leave this summer, Liverpool are relying on James Milner and Joe Gomez to deputise for Andy Robertson at left-back.

Yasser Larouci has impressed in the pre-season but the youngster still has time to break into the first team and it makes sense for Klopp to make a move for a backup full back.

Max, who does have his frailties, has qualities that make him attractive to Klopp. He may not be defensively astute but he will be effective at the other end of the field and against certain opponents, could be a match-winner for The Reds.

He has experience at the highest level and can replace Robertson even in the tougher games and playing alongside Virgil van Dijk will only make him a better player.

At his age, for his price, Max is an absolute steal for any top club in Europe and if Liverpool do not find a better backup option for Robertson, they should not hesitate to meet the valuation of the Augsburg full-back this summer and give their all to try and hijack the deal.
