Former PL star claims Tottenham will move in for this left-back: Good option for the club?

Former Premier League defender Danny Mills has claimed Tottenham Hotspur could make a move for Everton left-back Lucas Digne.

In an interview with Football Insider, the former England international even claimed that Digne could move to the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium this summer should Danny Rose leave.

The 42-year-old said, “There is talk of Lucas Digne going to Tottenham to replace Danny Rose if he leaves.

“There could be something in that, and it’s one to keep an eye on as a late window deal.

“He has been brilliant. He’s now worth £40million, more than double what they paid.”

The 25-year-old full-back was Everton’s Player of the Year last season as they finished eighth in the Premier League table.

Digne finished the season with 4 goals and 5 assists 37 appearances for the Toffees.

Would Digne be a good option for Tottenham?

The left-footed player is a typical modern-day full-back who likes to maraud forward and play a role in the build-up play.

The Frenchman’s pinpoint crossing, shots from outside the area, and his set-piece proficiency are some other attributes he has in his locker.

The former Barcelona full-back took no time to adjust to the rigours of English football, and his immediate impact shows his quality.

Digne has worked his way to become an undisputed starter at Goodison Park ahead of Leighton Baines, and was vital to Everton’s late resurgence in the 2018/19 season, after a dull start.

Current first-choice full-back Rose has been linked with an exit, and Spurs have been linked with a move for Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon as a possible replacement. Although Sessegnon is a decent option as well, Digne’s ability and experience means he would be a more ready-made alternative for Rose.

Still only 25, Digne has featured for some of the top sides in Europe. The French international had spells with PSG and AS Roma, before a big-money move to Barcelona.

The left-back has the ingredients to flourish in Mauricio Pochettino’s set-up, as he is technically strong, has the ability to contribute in attack, and has good work ethic as well.

With pace to burn, Digne can stretch defences in attack, something Rose did well considering Spurs’ played with inverted wingers more often than not.

A fee of £40 million might seem a bit high, but if Spurs can get good money for Rose, they should fork out the money to sign Digne.
