Newcastle United want to sign this German ace: A good choice by Benitez?

Rafa benitez

Newcastle United have been in the news over the last few weeks, this time for all the right reasons. The Magpies have been linked with a host of quality players, which is a big plus for Newcastle fans as owner Mike Ashley has been rather stingy in the transfer market.

The club might also change hands as Ashley is set to sell the club to Khalid bin Sultan bin Zayed Al Nahyan, a member of the Abu Dhabi royal family.

It seems that Newcastle will spend big ahead of the 2019-20 Premier League season and the club have now been linked with Paris Saint-Germain goalkeeper Kevin Trapp as per Express Sport.

Trapp was on loan at Eintracht Frankfurt in the 2018-19 season, who are also looking to sign the German on a permanent deal, and they have reportedly put in a bid of €10 million recently.

Trapp signed for the French club for the same transfer fee back in 2015 from Eintracht Frankfurt.

The 28-year-old was PSG’s number 1 keeper for his first two seasons in the club, but was usurped by Alphonse Areola in the starting XI and fell further down the pecking order after the arrival of legendary goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon from Juventus.

Trapp has represented his national team on 3 occasions since debuting back in 2017, and was a part of Germany’s FIFA Confederations Cup title-winning team.

Kevin Trapp  – A good choice by Benitez?

Rafa Benitez used Slovakian goalkeeper Martin Dubravka for the majority of the season as the ever-dependable 30-year-old ‘keeper played in all but 4 games in all competitions for Newcastle.

It’s quite clear that the Spanish manager trusts the experienced keeper, but every team in the Premier League needs two quality keepers in the squad to increase competition.

Trapp is a quality keeper, who has shown that he has quick reflexes when faced with shots from close range.

The German has European experience, having featured heavily in Champions League football with the French club.

Trapp’s distribution is pretty good, and he is pretty good at coming out and clearing the danger, a la Manuel Neuer, when required. His towering presence helps him in set-piece situations, something that will help him in the more physical Premier League. And in terms of shot-stopping, he is at par with Dubravka, if not better.

The 28-year old’s contract at PSG expires in 2020, which means that he will be available at a bargain price, so he would be a more than decent addition to Newcastle.
