Wolves linked with a club record transfer for Frenchman: SWOT analysis

Wolves linked with a club record transfer for Frenchman: SWOT analysis 1

Wolves have been the surprise package of this year’s Premier League, as manager Nuno Espírito Santo has moulded a strong team that can give any team in the Premier League a run for their money.

Their success in the 2018-19 campaign was built on the strong showing of their Portuguese midfield duo of Rúben Neves and João Moutinho, who have dominated stronger midfield oppositions this season.

With more financial muscle, Wolves may add a few more players to their squad for next season, and one player linked to the team is Marseille midfielder, Morgan Sanson.

French outlet Telefoot had reported in April that Sanson is attracting Wolves’ interest, and recent reports claim the club might break their transfer record for the player.

Strengths

The Frenchman is a smart player who adapts to various situations in the match, playing at the heart of midfield.

Primarily a central midfielder, Sanson can play as a holding midfielder and has even been played further up the field, although the No. 6 role is his favoured position.

Sanson is a good tackler of the ball, has the ability to go up and down the pitch while also being technically sound with the ball at his feet, putting attacking players through with perfect, pinpoint passes.

The Frenchman has scored 4 goals and 4 assists in the current season in all competitions (stats courtesy transfermarkt).

Weaknesses

Sanson is not very strong physically and may get outmuscled on the pitch while he isn’t very great in the air too.

The midfielder averages less than one aerial duel won per game in the Ligue 1, and that’s something he will have to work on as the Premier League will have more physical set-piece routines.

Opportunities

Sanson could make the move to Wolves as a replacement for Ruben Neves if the Portuguese midfielder leaves the Midlands club. Even if Neves doesn’t leave the club, he could have a good partnership in midfield with Sanson, and with Moutinho now 32 years of age, he may not be available for every game.

If he does move to Wolves, Sanson will most likely be assured a position in the starting lineup, which may not be possible at other top clubs.

Threats

Wolves will play in the Europa League next season, but the other club that are interested in Sanson, Borussia Dortmund, could tempt him to join them as the German side will be playing in the Champions League next season.
