Tottenham Hotspur want to sign Portuguese midfielder: A good choice by Pochettino

Tottenham Hotspur are ready to make a summer move for Andre Gomes, it has been reported.

Gomes, who is currently on loan from Barcelona, and has done well for Everton this season, having managed to play in a good number of games.

It is likely that Blaugrana will want to offload the Portuguese international in the summer considering the plethora of midfielders they have at the club right now.

According to the Telegraph, Mauricio Pochettino has been given the green light to make a £30 million move for the Everton midfielder in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Andre Gomes: The ideal player for Tottenham

Injuries have been a real problem for Tottenham Hotspur this season, especially in the midfield department. The likes of Eric Dier, Harry Winks and even Dele Alli have suffered from frequent injuries over the course of the campaign, and none of the three players has exceeded the 2,000-minute mark this season.

As a result, Pochettino has often been forced to utilise Christian Eriksen in a deeper role. The departure of Mousa Dembele earlier this year hasn’t been helpful either.

Therefore, the addition of someone like Gomes could make a world of sense for the Lilywhites as they aim to refresh their midfield unit next season.

As mentioned earlier, the Portuguese star has enjoyed a good spell under the tutelage of Marco Silva. His ability to circulate possession and bring others into the play has been fruitful for the Toffees not only in transition phases but in terms of providing attacking support to his teammates.

Gomes has attained an excellent pass completion rate of 84% while his tally of 1.6 dribbles per game is indicative of his quality as a ball-carrier. This could be beneficial for Spurs, who have duly struggled in their transition play, especially in the absence of Eriksen.

The Portuguese might operate as the deep-lying midfielder alongside a more robust figure of Dier or Victor Wanyama, thus allowing the likes of Alli and Eriksen to become more expressive in the final third.

However, the 25-year-old will certainly need to improve on his composure, having been dispossessed at an average of almost 2 times per game. This won’t tune in well with Tottenham’s efficient gameplay under Pochettino.

From a general perspective, however, Gomes will be an ideal signing for Spurs, who are likely to face budget restraints in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Therefore, his £30 million valuation makes him a significantly cheaper option when compared to other available midfielders in the market.
