Tottenham Hotspur eyeing versatile German defender: Why Pochettino should make a move

Tottenham Hotspur are eyeing a summer move for Freiburg defender Robin Koch, it has been claimed.

According to Daily Mail, the Lilywhites have identified Robin Koch as one of the main defensive targets this summer as they ready themselves for life without Toby Alderweireld next season.

It is believed that the Freiburg defender could cost around £12 million – making him one of the cheapest options available in the market for Tottenham this summer.

Robin Koch: A smart addition to the Tottenham defence

As iterated earlier, Spurs are preparing for the potential departure of Alderweireld next season, which could leave a gaping hole in their defensive department. Therefore, Koch will be a smart addition to the Tottenham defence for a number of reasons.

Koch rose to prominence last season under Christian Streich. His versatility in defence made it easier for the Freiburg coach to accommodate him in his traditional 4-4-2, especially after the departure of Caglar Soyuncu. Koch has already made 48 appearances in the past couple of seasons.

The 22-year-old has been predominantly utilised as a defensive midfielder. But, he has also featured as a centre-back as well as left back, which is indicative of his versatile nature in defence.

This could be a boon for Mauricio Pochettino, who has struggled with injuries to his key players throughout the campaign. And with Alderweireld likely to leave the club in the summer, the addition of Koch could make a world of sense for the Lilywhites.

As far as his gameplay is concerned, Koch is known for his work-rate and commitment. In addition, he is excellent when it comes to aerial duels, thanks to his 192 cm frame, which, in turn, also makes him an indirect threat from set-pieces.

The Freiburg defender can be used as a back-up for Eric Dier in the holding midfield role. Additionally, he can also provide cover for the defensive duo of Jan Vertonghen and Davinson Sanchez.

However, Pochettino has preferred the three-at the back formation, of late. That means we can expect Juan Foyth to play a significant role in the first-team next season. And to that end, Koch could provide extra competition in the defensive department.

Koch’s meagre valuation of £12 million could potentially make him a bargain for Tottenham considering his versatility and defensive work-ethic. Therefore, the acquisition of Koch could indeed turn out to be a smart piece of business from the Lilywhites.
