Manchester United could emerge as shock contenders to sign Real Madrid star Sergio Ramos; it has been claimed.

Manchester United could turn out to be a potential destination for Sergio Ramos, who is contemplating leaving Real Madrid this summer – as reported by Daily Mail.

It is believed that Ramos’ relationship with the club’s hierarchy has taken a hit after a turbulent campaign and a move away from the Santiago Bernabeu could on the horizon, with United and PSG likely to pounce.

Sergio Ramos to Manchester United: An unlikely transfer for the Red Devils

It’s probably needless to that Ramos is one of the most accomplished defenders in the history of football. The Spaniard has won basically everything during his decorated career and even at the age of 33, he has continued to be a mainstay in the Real Madrid backline.

However, making a move for Ramos might not be the most prudent decision from Manchester United’s perspective. The Red Devils have struggled with their lack of defensive solidity in the recent campaign, having conceded more goals than any side in the Premier League top nine.

The likes of Phil Jones, Marcos Rojo and Chris Smalling have struggled with consistency while Eric Bailly faces an uncertain future at the club. As a result, Victor Lindelof will be the club’s only reliable option in defence next season.

But even, Ramos, at the age of 33, is unlikely to spark new life into the United backline. On the contrary, the veteran defender may struggle in the physically demanding and fast-paced nature of the Premier League.

Although his vast experience at the highest level of football might be useful in nurturing players like Lindelof into a much more accomplished defender, he fails to provide any future prospect for the club. In addition, Ramos’ steady deterioration over the past 12 months has been rather evident and it could only go downhill going forward.

Hence, the Red Devils should shift their attention to a younger alternative, who can not only serve the club for at least three years, potentially going on to become a long-term option but can also provide leadership and identity to the team’s backline – with just the latter part something which Ramos seems to be capable of delivering.

Someone like Milan Skriniar or even Alessio Romagnoli could be exciting options for Ole-Gunnar Solskjaer as he attempts to build his squad with a bunch of young players next season.
