Opinion: Arsenal and Inter Milan among clubs who should target this World Cup winner

German defender Jerome Boateng, who has been a part of a fantastic Bayern Munich, winning seven Bundesliga titles, one Champions League, and several German cups, may be leaving the club in the summer.

Bayern Munich President Uli Hoeness recently stated in an interview that he would advise Boateng to leave the club as he thinks the centre-back needs a new challenge.

“I would advise him to leave the club. Because I think he needs a new challenge. He seems out of place!

“And as a friend, I would advise him to find himself a new club. The door isn’t shut; he has a contract, after all,” Hoeness was quoted as saying by Sky Sports.

Boateng played in just 28 games in the season, which saw Niklas Sule become an important defender in the Bayern team. And with the arrival of Lucas Hernández and Benjamin Pavard, both young and versatile defenders who can play in full-back and centre-back positions, Boateng may have even fewer minutes on the pitch next season.

Inter Milan

Inter Milan finished fourth in the league in Serie A in the 2018-19 season, level on points with third-placed Atalanta. Inter’s big problem in the year was in attack as their top scorer finished the year with just 11 goals, Argentine striker, Mauro Icardi.

Boateng was linked with a move to Inter earlier this month, and although they have two steady defenders in Stefan de Vrij and 24-year-old Milan Skriniar, the latter who signed a new contract.

The German defender could add some leadership and depth to the Inter squad if he does move to the Italian side, and help them compete with Juventus at the top of the Italian league.

Arsenal

Arsenal, under Unai Emery, have had a mixed year. They finished fifth in the league but have progressed to the Europa League final, where they will face Chelsea.

The Gunners need a solid, world-class defender at the back if Emery’s side wants to finish in the Champions League spots.

Sokratis Papastathopoulos and Shkodran Mustafi haven’t necessarily impressed at the back, while captain and experienced centre-back Laurent Koscielny, at 33 years of age, is no longer the player he was.

Boateng has prior Premier League experience, having played for Manchester City previously. The German defender could be the catalyst to change Arsenal’s fortunes and offer some stability and leadership at the back.

Paris Saint-Germain

Paris Saint-Germain have run away with the Ligue 1 title six of the last seven times, but haven’t fared well in the Champions League, which is the trophy that they desperately want to win.

They have a few good defenders in Thiago Silva, Marquinhos and Presnel Kimpembe, they’ve shown that in big games, they often fall in the last hurdle, with their defence mostly to blame.

Boateng has previously won the Champions League with Bayern, while also being an integral part of Germany’s 2014 World Cup win, showing that he is a big-game player who can make a huge impact on teams in elite competitions.
