Tottenham Hotspur keen on Premier League defensive ace: A good move in the offing

Tottenham Hotspur are ready to challenge arch-rivals Arsenal in the pursuit of Fabian Schar, according to reports.

The Newcastle United defender has caught attention with his impressive performances, of late and as per The Mirror, Tottenham are already mulling over a move for the Swiss international.

However, the Lilywhites could face stiff competition from Arsenal for the services of Schar.

Fabian Schar: An interesting option for Mauricio Pochettino

It goes without saying that Mauricio Pochettino will look to bulk up his defensive options in the summer despite boasting the services of three well-established centre-backs.

Spurs are on a four-game winless run, during which, their lack of solidity in defence has seen them not only lose out in the title race but also allow the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal to come perilously close to them in the table.

The young Davinson Sanchez has not had the same impact as last season and his form has not been consistent enough this time around. Toby Alderweireld’s reported release clause of £25 million can be triggered in the upcoming summer transfer window, possibly leaving Tottenham a bit shallow in the defensive department.

Therefore, the addition of a new defender could be imperative for the Lilywhites and that’s where Schar comes into the fray.

As mentioned earlier, the Newcastle star has impressed this season with his dogged defending and the commitment he has shown. In fact, the Swiss international has averaged over 2 tackles per game whilst making 2.6 interceptions, which is indicative of his proficiency in reading the game.

Schar’s tally of almost six clearances per game is also quite remarkable but what has made him such a success at Newcastle this season is his aerial dominance. Indeed, the 27-year-old’s imposing 1.88m frame allows him to prevail in aerial duels, with the defender having won over 3 headed duels per game.

It also makes him an indirect threat from set-pieces, though none of his three goals so far have been scored from a header this season.

Therefore, the addition of someone like Schar could be beneficial for Spurs as he will not only be able to provide more defensive cover for Pochettino but his commitment and vigour will also fortify the Tottenham backline that has lacked defensive solidity this season.
