Transfer News: Liverpool Closing In On Bundesliga Defensive Rock

Maximilian Beier

Jurgen Klopp, the Liverpool Manager, might soon be reunited with Matthias Ginter.

The Liverpool boss managed Matthias Ginter during his days at Borrusia Dortmund. According to a report by Mirror, Klopp is interested in bringing Ginter over to Liverpool.

He had previously bought Ginter once before when he was managing the German club. It appears that despite coming to Liverpool in the Premier League, Klopp’s appreciation of Ginter’s talents has not faded in the least bit.

In the years in between, Ginter has moved to Borrusia M.Gladbach and has become more accomplished with regular appearances for his side.

Matthias Ginter: Player Profile

The young German defender has versatility in his style of play and has been known to play on more advanced positions on occasion as a defensive midfielder. His current season has seen him start on 21 different occasions for his club.

At 25 years of age, Ginter has many years of play ahead of him. The current Liverpool side is comparatively young, and he would be a good fit.

In this season, Ginter has scored one goal, and been prolific in defence. With 1.1 tackles, 0.8 interceptions, and 4.3 clearances in games, he has been a rock in the Gladbach defence. To add to that, he lacks discipline issues, with only two yellow cards for his club.

How would Matthias Ginter fit into Klopp’s Liverpool?

Klopp has some really capable defenders in his side, including the top-rated Virgil Van Dijk. Despite Joe Gomez being the preferred partner for Van Dijk early on, Klopp has rotated his partners regularly, with Dejan Lovren and Joel Matip both being played next to the Dutch defender.

Matthias Ginter might be just the defender that Klopp is looking for, as he has not been convinced by the performances that Matip has delivered. Given the familiarity between Ginter and Klopp, it would not take long the defender to adjust to the manager’s playing style either.

Fitting into a side next to Virgil Van Dijk would prove to be a challenge to anyone, given the attention the defender has received of late. Playing in the shadow of a brilliant player is not easy — Gareth Bale might be able to testify to that. However, it could prove the perfect opportunity for him to find his feet while being covered by Van Dijk.

If the transfer were to happen, it would add to Liverpool’s burgeoning roster of defenders, and increase the competition for each player forcing them to play at their top levels.
