Everton eyeing a move for La Liga star: A smart choice by Marco Silva

Everton are ready to challenge arch-rivals Liverpool in the pursuit of Diego Llorente, it has been claimed.

According to Noticias de Gipuzkoa, the Toffees have identified the Real Sociedad star as one of their top transfer targets as they look to add more depth defensive options in the summer.

However, they might face stiff competition from Liverpool. Llorente will cost around €30 million.

Diego Llorente: A smart choice by Marco Silva

It has been a mixed campaign for Everton under new coach Marco Silva and while the Portuguese mastermind has been able to oversee a steady improvement in his squad, he still needs to make a few changes in the summer if Everton are to challenge for the top six spots next season.

The defence, in particular, is an area that needs to be tended to as the Toffees have lacked the services of reliable defensive options. Former Barcelona star Yerry Mina has seen his debut campaign in the Premier League marred by injuries and his performance this season has been far from impressive.

In addition, Everton are unlikely to keep hold of Kurt Zouma on a permanent basis after Chelsea’s request to delay the transfer ban was denied, while Phil Jagielka’s contract comes to an end this summer.

The performance against Newcastle United on Saturday pretty much summed up the Toffees’ defence this season.

Llorente has been a vital figure in the Sociedad backline as La Real have conceded only 27 goals this season. The 25-year old has an excellent sense of positioning, having averaged over one interception per game.

The Spanish international is also quite dominant in the air, thanks to his 186cm frame, which, in turn, makes him an indirect threat from set-pieces. Llorente has won three aerial duels per game in the league this season.

But, what makes Llorente such an appealing target for Everton is his excellent composure on the ball as well as his ability to circulate possession from the back, which could be a huge boost for the Toffees. In fact, Llorente has attained 85% pass completion rate this season whilst averaging over 50 passes per game.

Therefore, the Real Sociedad star could prove to be an excellent defensive partner for Michael Keane, whose dogged defending would be well complemented by the Spaniard’s ability to facilitate the backline with his laser passes, thus adding another dimension to the Everton defence.
