Wolves eyeing a big-money transfer for 16-goal forward: Smashing move by Santo 1

According to The Sun, Wolverhampton Wanderers are eyeing a move for Chelsea forward Tammy Abraham, who is currently on loan at Aston Villa.

Abraham is set to end his loan spell with Aston Villa and return to Stamford Bridge, it has also been claimed by the Sun.

Wolves have already tabled a £18 million bid to sign him on a permanent basis. But, is he really a viable option for the newly-promoted side?

Tammy Abraham: Player profile

Abraham made his Premier League breakthrough during a loan spell at Swansea last season, and he netted five goals in 31 matches for the Welsh side.

After moving to Aston Villa in the summer of 2018, Abraham has set the Championship ablaze, having scored 16 goals in just 20 league matches so far.

As his record would suggest, Abraham is a good finisher and has raw pace to trouble even the quickest of defenders. Abraham can get in behind the defence, meaning he can be easily utilised in a counter-attacking system.

In addition, the 21-year old can create chances in the final third. He has averaged 0.8 key passes per game this season, which is certainly not a bad reading for a centre-forward.

However, what makes Abraham an intriguing player is his work ethic and the tendency to track-back while his tall frame allows him to dominate opposition players in the air.

The 21-year-old has won 3.1 aerial duels per game this season – a tally only bettered by defenders James Chester and Alex Tuanzebe (at least 10 games played).

Why do Wolves need Abraham?

Abraham would be an excellent signing for Wolves for a number of reasons. His willingness to get in behind the defence combined with his raw race would make him an ideal player for Nuno Espirito Santo’s tactical philosophy at Wolves.

Although the Portuguese mastermind has been happy with Raul Jimenez’s performances so far this season, the Mexican lags behind in terms of pace and that’s where Abraham comes in.

Not only will the Chelsea starlet inject more pace into the Wolves attack but he can provide added depth to Wolves’ attacking department.

Furthermore, Abraham’s tendency to track-back and take part in the build-up would be beneficial for the likes of Diogo Jota, Ruben Neves and co. while his aerial dominance is always a bonus, especially with the Matt Doherty’s crossing ability from the wider area.

However, it remains to be seen whether or not Chelsea look to ask for a bigger fee, which would be understandable considering how well Abraham has performed this season.
