Wolves Sensation on Tottenham Hotspur’s radar: Should Pochettino pursue this deal?

tottenham hotspur

Wolverhampton Wanderers wing-back Matt Doherty is on the radar of Tottenham Hotspur, a report on Independent has claimed.

However, the report also states that Wolves are willing to offer him double of his current wages of £20,000-a-week to keep him at the Molineux Stadium. Intriguingly, Doherty is believed to be in the line to become a client of influential super-agent Jorge Mendes.

Matt Doherty: Profile

Doherty was signed by Wolves in 2010 from the ranks of Bohemian FC, and his father played an instrumental role in the move. He paved his way to becoming a first-team regular and played a big part in the promotion of the Wolves from the Championship last season.

He has adjusted himself in the Premier League in a commendable manner and has scored three goals and registered four assists in 21 league games so far for the Premier League newcomers. Unarguably, he is one of the most valuable stars in the ranks of Nuno Espirito Santo and no wonder they are keen to tie him down to a new and improved contract.

Attributes

Doherty is a swashbuckling full back who gets forward with frightening ease to create regular attacking opportunities for his side. But to his advantage, unlike most attack-minded fullbacks, he is wary of his defensive duties and has played a key role in ensuring that the Molineux-outfit possess a commendable and tight defence, especially against the big guns in the league.

To add to that, he has shown remarkable consistency for the West Midlands based outfit over the last few seasons, thus endearing himself to the fans as well.

Why Spurs are after him?

Spurs are willing to offload Serge Aurier, a recent report by Daily Mail stated, and Doherty is seen as a replacement for Aurier. Doherty is versatile and can operate on either flank, and the strong performances he has put in the English top flight for Wolves have put Spurs on alert.

Is a deal likely?

Mendes has many clients at Wolves including the likes of Ruben Neves, Joao Moutinho, Rui Patricio and Raul Jimenez and the close link of the super-agent with Wolves’ Chinese owners Fosun is not unknown. Apparently, Doherty is expected to be the next feather in the cap of his company GestiFute.

The positive influence of Mendes on Wolves has been evident, and Doherty’s apparent inclination to link up with him is expected to secure his future with Wolves. The report by Independent also states that the Northern Ireland international is happy at Wolves and therefore, it wouldn’t be easy for Mauricio Pochettino’s camp to sign him.
