Tottenham Hotspur reconsidering move for Ligue 1 midfielder: Here’s why they need him

tottenham hotspur

According to The Mirror, Tottenham Hotspur have reignited their interest in midfielder Tanguy Ndombele. The Olympique Lyon player has impressed a lot of clubs around Europe with his consistent performances in the Ligue 1 over the past year or so, chief among which are Manchester City and Tottenham.

It is believed that Tottenham made attempts to sign the midfielder earlier this summer but soon surrendered their chase after a £40million bid was rejected. However, his excellent start to this new season has forced the Lilywhites to take another look at him, with a January switch very much on the cards.

Ndombele Player profile

A product of the Guingamp youth academy, Tanguy Ndombele made his move from Amiens to Olympique Lyon in a season-long loan deal at the start of last season. And his move was quickly made permanent this summer by the Ligue 1 giants after he made 32 appearances in that corresponding season.

Primarily a central midfielder, Ndombele is a utility player who can be deployed anywhere across the middle of the pitch.

While his immense technical qualities allow him to thrive in any position on the field, it’s his physical prowess which enables him to contain pressure from the opposing defenders.

He is very clever when it comes to ball retention and his passing is top-notch though he’s more of a dynamic midfielder rather than a midfield orchestrator.

Much like Watford’s Abdoulaye Doucoure, the 21-year-old is proficient in making driving runs from midfield into the final third with his immense physical prowess allowing him to hold his own against the pressure exerted by the opposing defenders.

Why do Tottenham Hotspur need Tanguy Ndombele?

Tanguy Ndombele is someone Tottenham have been looking for a very long time given his characteristics in midfield, which make him an ideal long-term successor to Mousa Dembele.

Although he may not be as proficient in making the transition from defence to offence, Ndombele is certainly an all-round midfielder, who could evolve as a transitional midfielder.

Having already notched up four assists in just nine games this season, his expertise in the final third is quite evident and considering Mauricio Pochettino’s reputation of nurturing young talents, Ndombele will surely be a successful addition for the Lilywhites.
