Tottenham Hotspur Eyeing A Move For Serie A Defender: A Smart Choice By Pochettino

According to Transfermarketweb, Tottenham Hotspur are considering a move for Sampdoria starlet Joachim Andersen as they aim to bolster their defence in January. The 22-year-old has been one of Serie A’s rising stars this season and has attracted interest from Europe’s top clubs.

Tottenham, in particular, are keen on reinforcing their defensive department in the upcoming January transfer window with Andersen being identified as one of the leading candidates. But, will it prove to be a good move for the Lilywhites?

Joachim Andersen: Player profile and stats

Joachim Andersen initially moved to Italy last summer, in a €1.4 million move from FC Twente. While he did struggle to make an impact during his debut campaign with Sampdoria, making only seven league appearances, Andersen has become an integral part of the Blucerchiati defence in this new season.

Following the departure of veteran centre-back Matias Silvestre in the summer, Andersen has already featured in all of Sampdoria’s league matches this season. In fact, his solid defensive performances have played a key role in Sampdoria’s impressive start to the season as they currently lie ahead of Roma, Milan and Fiorentina in the league table.

The Danish defender has notched up impressive numbers this season, averaging 1.8 tackles along with over one interception per game. He also leads the team in clearances, having made 37 of them, in just eight matches while only Albin Ekdal has managed to win more aerial battles than the 22-year-old defender.

Thus, he is certainly an all-round operator at the back who excels at not only defending but also when it comes to circulating possession, having made the most number of accurate short passes than anyone else in the team. He has also made three key passes this season, most by any defender not named Bartosz Bereszynski.

Why do Tottenham need Joachim Andersen?

Signing Joachim Andersen could prove to be a smart piece of business from Tottenham Hotspur given the fact that they have lacked defensive options in recent years.

Although Spurs boast the services of three solid centre-backs in the form of Toby Alderweireld, Davinson Sanchez and Jan Vertonghen, injury to any of them could easily expose their lack of depth, especially with the congested fixture of English football.

Therefore, the addition of Andersen could provide some much-needed depth in the defensive department while his impressive performances in the Italian top flight also make him an even more appealing target for the Lilywhites as they seek to pose a strong threat for the title this season.
