Tottenham Hotspur eyeing a swoop for all-action midfielder: Just the player they need

Tottenham Hotspur might not have signed anyone in the summer transfer window, but don’t be surprised if the club land a few players in the January transfer window. Though financial resources at the club are stretched at the moment, the need to win silverware to show progress might force Mauricio Pochettino’s hand.

Recent reports from Calciomercato indicate that Tottenham will look to land influential Porto midfielder Hector Herrera in January.

TalkSPORT claim that Spurs will battle with AS Roma for the Mexican international but are the favourites to land him.

Hector Herrera – Fact file

Contracted with Porto until the summer of 2019, Herrera could come cheap and that will suit Spurs nicely as they are looking for value for money signings.

Herrera moved to Porto in the summer of 2013 and has been a consistent performer for the team, making over 100 appearances for the Dragons. He is also a regular for the Mexican national team, making 70 appearances for El Tri.

A holding midfielder, Herrera mustered impressive numbers in the midfield for Porto. Herrera had a passing accuracy of 84.7% last season and has bettered that this season, though it’s still early days in the domestic league. In addition, he made at least one key pass a game, which means he isn’t a slouch when it comes to providing the creativity.

Last season, Herrera made 2.8 tackles on an average and that number has gone up to 3.5 in the four games he has played in so far.

How will Herrera fit in at Tottenham?

Spurs do have a few good midfielders in their squad but Herrera’s addition could strengthen them. Mousa Dembele isn’t getting any younger and Eric Dier seems like he is too much of a defensive minded midfielder. Herrera can spray the ball around better and add more creativity from the deeper areas.

Pochettino doesn’t seem to trust Victor Wanyama as much as he did during the Kenyan’s first full season with the club. Last season, Wanyama made just eight starts in the league and his limitations on the ball mean Pochettino doesn’t prefer him as a first choice.

Mousa Dembele is 31 already and needs to be rotated with someone similar. Herrera is perhaps the cheapest alternative out there in the market and Spurs should be able to get him for a low fee if they can move in early during the January transfer window.
