Top Defenders In Matchweek 4: Arsenal And Watford Stars Feature 1

With just 27 goals scored from 10 games across the country on Game Week 4 of the Premier League this season, it is evident that defensive units in the league are bang in form at the moment. The likes of Wolves, Liverpool and Watford all registered victories, thanks to the performances from their defenders while lapses in defending almost cost Arsenal a game as Spurs went down to the Hornets due to similar issues.

But who was the best defender on Game Week 4 in the Premier League? Here are the top three defenders of the weekend, for you to choose the best from:

Jose Holebas (Watford):

The Hornets stunned Tottenham Hotspur at Vicarage Road this weekend and it was a collective effort from the team, as they frustrated the visitors and outplayed them at times. It was Jose Holebas’ industry down the left flank that caused them the most trouble. The Greek international registered two key passes and two assists, making a real impact in the final third. But he also made five clearances and two tackles, putting in four crosses, most of which were troubling. Surely, he was crucial in Watford retaining their 100% win record in the current league season.

Shkodran Mustafi (Arsenal):

Arsenal have finally managed to find some form this season but their defensive unit still seems vulnerable. They conceded twice on their trip to Cardiff City Stadium this weekend, but a late goal from Alexander Lacazette helped them to three crucial points. But it was Shkodran Mustafi who opened the scoring for the visitors, just 12 minutes into the game. The German international won five aerial duels, and also made five clearances, two interceptions and a tackle as he added some grit to a backline that seems disjointed. In the absence of Laurent Koscielny, Unai Emery needs Mustafi to step up, which is exactly what he did in this game, helping his side to just their second win of the new campaign.

Cedric Soares (Southampton):

Goals from Danny Ings and Pierre Emile-Hojbjerg were enough or Southampton to register back to back victories in the league this season, as they also managed to keep a clean sheet on their trip to Selhurst Park this weekend. While the whole backline was solid, it was Cedric Soares’ balanced approach to the game that allowed the Saints to stay on top. The Portuguese international provided the assist for Ings’ goal and also registered three key passes and two shots on goal. He had a passing accuracy of 85% even as he made six clearances, two tackles and an interception, all crucial for Southampton to steal all three points.
