Manchester City eyeing a bold £54m move for La Liga defender: Not the wisest move by Pep

According to Eldesmarque, Manchester City are plotting a £54 million swoop for Junior Firbo. The Real Betis left-back has been reportedly identified as a top target by Pep Guardiola who is apparently keen on bolstering his defence once again despite the impressive form of Benjamin Mendy.

It is believed that Firbo has been a subject of strong interest from Man City for a long time now with scouts monitoring his progress earlier this year.

Although the player signed a long-term contract with Betis in August, it is understood that there is a £54 million release clause in his contract. But, is he worth all the fuss?

Player profile and statistics

Unlike many other promising fullbacks plying their trade in Europe, Junior Firbo is a relatively inexperienced individual, having made his professional debut back in February. He was a regular for Betis B, where made 44 appearances.

But, ever since making his La Liga debut last campaign, Firbo’s quality was evident as he netted twice in 14 matches, helping his team finish sixth in the final league standings.

As far as his skill set is concerned, Firpo is an all-round defensive talent who ticks most boxes, be it offence or defence. Indeed, the 22-year-old attempted 2.4 tackles, made 1.4 interceptions whilst averaging almost 2 clearances per game last season. He also averaged over one aerial duel along with 1.4 dribbles, reflecting his overall quality at both ends of the pitch.

However, what makes Junior Firpo such a sought-after talent is his versatility. Aside from his preferred left-back position, the Betis star can be deployed as the centre-back and even as a winger, if necessary – a quality which could make him an asset to any team in the world.

Why should Manchester City drop the idea of buying Junior Firpo

Despite his obvious all-round qualities, the interest on Junior Firpo seems rather bizarre as far as Manchester City are concerned. Even though the Premier League champions struggled with the injury of Benjamin Mendy last season, the Frenchman has already shown great promise in the on-going campaign and seems unstoppable at the moment.

In addition, City already have the services of Fabian Delph, should they require a back-up for Mendy in the left-back position. The English international is fairly experienced and is well capable of filling in the said position.

Furthermore, spending a fortune on a young and inexperienced player like Firpo could turn out to be a huge gamble.
