Liverpool vs Chelsea preview: Team News, Predicted Lineups and Odds

liverpool lineup

Liverpool will begin their EFL Cup campaign with a tough tie against Chelsea tomorrow. Although the Cup game is likely to be more of an undercard to the more fancied Premier League clash this weekend, the presence of some of the so-called fringe players who will be hungry to prove themselves could make it an interesting game.

Both sides are expected to make a few changes but considering the squads they have, it could still be a pretty competitive and an end to end game. Klopp vs Sarri is something the neutrals will be looking forward to as well considering how proactive the two teams are on the pitch.

Liverpool have had a slightly better start compared to Chelsea because they are yet to drop a single point. With a record of seven wins out of seven games in all competitions, the Reds have made an early statement that Manchester City won’t have it all their way this season. And because of their better squad this time, they can focus on the domestic cups as well, something that has been their Achilles Heel in the last few seasons.

Chelsea, on the other hand, are always expected to win trophies. Though last season was a disappointing one, they still ended up as the FA Cup winners. The league cup might provide Sarri with the opportunity to integrate some of the fringe players into his style, however.

Liverpool vs Chelsea – Team News

Liverpool don’t have too many injuries issues and the fact that they have coasted to six league wins without their big money signing Fabinho tells a lot. The Brazilian is in line to start in midfield.

Jürgen Klopp has already said that Simon Mignolet will start in goal and don’t be surprised if the usual front three of Firmino, Salah and Mane don’t start. Divock Origi is back and is in contention to start. Virgil van Dijk was subbed off for a rib issue and he is unlikely to feature.

Chelsea suffered a blow when Antonio Rudiger was taken off against West Ham United and in his absence, we expected Gary Cahill to get the nod. Cesc Fabregas still isn’t match fit but was on the bench for the clash against West Ham. He could do the role of distributing the recycling possession like Jorginho. Ross Barkley hasn’t had too many minutes in the league and he is in line to start as well.

Young Andreas Christensen is another player who will be keen on impressing the manager. The Dane was a regular under Conte but hasn’t been the preferred choice this season.
