Strongest Possible Wolverhampton Wanderers Lineup: Good Enough For Survival

Wolverhampton Wanderers are all set for next weekend as they’ll play their first top-flight game in years after managing promotion. Under the tutelage of Nuno Espirito Santo, Wolves clinched the second division title and were absolutely dazzling to watch.

The Portuguese has made some shrewd signings in the current transfer window, having signed the likes of Willy Boly, Diogo Jota, Joao Moutinho, Jonny Castro and Rui Patricio.

Despite having the tag of a promoted side, Wolves already look formidable on paper and we expect them to survive the battle for relegation with ease.

With a strong squad available, here is the best possible starting line-up that Wolves can roll out this season.

Goalkeeper

John Ruddy did a brilliant job between the sticks last term. The 31-year-old made 45 league appearances and made 99 saves. Despite the arrival of Rui Patricio, Ruddy might still be the first-choice ‘keeper for Wolves this season.

Defence

In the three-man defence, the preferred trio of last season, Boly, Conor Coady and Ryan Bennett, should be the ones getting the nod to start owing to the resilience and ability to get the ball out of the back.

Boly was signed permanently earlier this summer after his herculean efforts in Wolves’ push for the Championship title. These three defenders have a notable chemistry amongst them and it will be intriguing to see how they fare in the top tier.

There are a lot of expectations on Castro who has joined on loan from Atletico Madrid. He is the best option at left wing-back. Matt Doherty is perhaps the best player on the right, considering his rich vein of form of last season.

Midfield

Ruben Neves was one of the best players for Espirito Santo last season. The central midfielder managed 6 goals and registered 1 assist in 42 league appearances and also mustered 2.3 tackles and 1.7 interceptions per game on an average.

Alongside someone as experienced as Moutinho, Neves will learn a lot more about his trade. The two will provide the combination of youth and experience in the top flight.

Attack

With Diogo Jota on the left flank and Ivan Cavaleiro on the right, Espirito Santo’s side should start with Leo Bonatini up top.

Their fluidic attacking movement in the final third will be a thing to watch out during the season and teams will have to be wary of the threat.
