Jose Mourinho, despite signing Lee Grant, Fred and Diogo Dalot, was desirous to lay his hands on a world-class centre-back to enhance his arsenal. However, Mourinho wasn’t backed by the board as they believed that he already had some quality defenders in his arsenal.
The former Chelsea skipper openly showcased his frustrations which soured the relationship between him and the board. Besides, his harsh comments on Manchester United’s superstar Paul Pogba after the World Cup have created a big conflict inside the club.
His ties with Red Devils’ CEO Ed Woodward have strained and Mourinho’s future at the Old Trafford looks far from certain, particularly after his side’s loss against Brighton & Hove Albion at the weekend. Lately, Zinedine Zidane has been getting heavily linked with Manchester United as Mourinho’s replacement.
Intriguingly, Manchester United legend Lee Sharpe, who had won three Premier League titles with the red half of Manchester, has openly backed Zidane. He believes that the former Real Madrid manager would be an ideal candidate for the managerial post if Mourinho is shown the exit door.
Speaking to BT Sport, Sharpe said: “I think Zidane would be an ideal candidate. He’s a big enough name who could cope with the pressure and the questions asked of managing a club of that size so I think he would be ideal. Mourinho is on trial again. He’s never looked happy since he’s been at the club.”
