Wolverhampton Wanderers Keen On €15m Rated English Defender: A Shrewd Choice?

Newly promoted Premier League club Wolverhampton Wanderers have been linked with a move for Alfie Mawson. The Swansea City defender was one of the bright sparks in an otherwise disappointing campaign last season that saw them getting relegated to the second tier.

Swansea’s relegation will likely cost them Alfie Mawson this summer as Wolves are considering a bid for the 24-year-old defender. The newly promoted giants are keen to bolster their defence with head coach Nuno Espirito eager to make an impression in the English top flight. The defensive department, in particular, has been identified as a weakness and thus, Alfie Mawson is a viable target for Wolves.

Mawson has been one of Swansea’s standout players in the last 24 months. Since his move to the Welsh outfit in a €5.9m deal from Barnsley, the 24-year-old has emerged as one of their strongest assets in the defensive department. During his two year stint with the club, Mawson has made over 70 appearances across all competitions, during which he has gained valuable experience, which has transformed him into a top-class Premier League defender.

In fact, his impressive performances last season even earned him a call-up to the England national team, even though he still remains uncapped. He’s also the most valued player for the Swans at the moment, with Transfermarkt valuing him around €15m.

Therefore, his addition to Wolverhampton Wanderers can prove to be a productive move not only for the player but for the club as well. The Wolves have money to burn with their billionaire Chinese owners ready to spend big bucks this summer.

Although Nuno Espirito Santo’s men finished the Championship last season, boasting the best defensive record in the division, Premier League will be a very different ballgame as everyone knows by now. Thus, the acquisition of a defender, who has valuable experience in the English top flight is imperative if they are to remain solid next season and Alfie Mawson fits the bill perfectly.

The 24-year-old can partner alongside last season’s star performer Willy Boly in central defence. While Mawson’s ability to remain diligent and composed in the defensive half will help Wolves in the Premier League, Will Boly’s physical aspects could add an extra dimension to their defensive department, ultimately shoring up their sturdy defence.

However, the Swansea City man’s lack of consistency might prove to be a cause for concern for head coach Nuno Espirito Santo. Hence, it remains to be seen whether or not the English defender manages to replicate his last season’s form once again in the top flight if given the opportunity.
