Sunderland Keen To Sign 31 Y/O Aston Villa Striker: A Good Deal For All Involved?

According to a recent report by Mail Online, Sunderland are keen to lure Aston Villa striker, Ross McCormack, to the Stadium of Light on loan. McCormack is understood to have no future at the Villa Park under the tutelage of Steve Bruce and is part of the deadwood that the Villans are keen to clear.

Sunderland managed to muster merely 37 points in the Championship last term as they finished rock-bottom in the league standings. They are due to ply their trade in League One this time around and they must aim to bag a promotion at the end of the season to avoid further disastrous consequences. Owing to their relegation to the third tier of English football, some of their key players of last season have already left the club.

However, Jack Ross has managed to pluck some signings on loan as well as on a free transfer. He has been operating on a shoestring budget and no wonder he has put McCormack on his radar to sharpen his attacking arsenal. The Scottish international has been deemed surplus to requirements by Bruce and he spent the first half of last season on loan at Melbourne City.

During his time with the A-League side, he plundered 13 goals in 15 games. Ironically, the Black Cats failed to agree loan terms with McCormack and things could have been different for them had they lured him to their ranks. However, Sunderland’s new owners are keen to add his touch up front and are thus desperately attempting to secure his signature.

The Black Cats are unlikely to land too many prominent names owing to the fact that they are now a League One outfit and thus, it would make a lot of sense if they manage to strike a deal with McCormack. The 31-year-old has truckloads of experience under his belt, having played for the likes of Rangers, Cardiff City, Leeds United and Fulham.

The last couple of years have been troublesome for him and the lack of camaraderie between him and Bruce has understandably affected his current standing. He is a proven goal-getter but his career has been dwindling at Aston Villa. A loan spell will come as a chance of resurrection for the striker and it would be a win-win situation for all the parties involved. If Ross and McCormack can strike a balance, he could eventually prove to be the signing of the season for Sunderland.
