Manchester City Might Look To Activate Buy Back Clause Of Midfield Ace: The Right Move?

Shocking reports from ESPN this week claim that Manchester City are considering a move to re-sign Aaron Mooy from Huddersfield Town. The Australian international was a star performer for Huddersfield last season and is currently one of the most sought-after midfielders in the English top flight.

Initially brought into the Premier League from Manchester City’s sister club Melbourne City FC in the summer of 2016, he was immediately loaned out to Huddersfield before making his move permanent last summer, following an impressive performance with the Terriers in the Championship.

However, this past season saw the Australian international transform into one of fiercest midfielders in the Premier League. He played a crucial role as Huddersfield managed to survive relegation despite boasting a relatively inferior squad when compared to most of the teams in the bottom half of the table.

Manchester City, on the other hand, have found resounding success under Pep Guardiola, who led them to their best ever finish in the Premier League last season. However, the Catalan mastermind is a man of perfection and is, therefore, keen to strengthen his side’s midfield this summer.

Fernandinho has been an ever-present figure in the Manchester City midfield but that being said, the Brazilian international is entering the final phase of his career at the highest level. Veteran midfielder Yaya Toure has also exited the Etihad this summer after the completion of his contract. In addition, German international Ilkay Gundogan has suffered from injury throughout his career and is not a reliable long-term option in midfield.

Therefore, Manchester City are in dire need of someone who can prove to be an asset in the holding midfield for the long term and Aaron Mooy is, thus, a viable target for the Citizens.

Blessed with aggression and physicality, Mooy could be a valuable addition for City in the midfield department. The combative midfielder even finished as one of Premier League’s top tacklers last season. During his time with Huddersfield, Aaron Mooy has already shown that he has the ability to play at the highest level of football and could ideally prove to be a great acquisition for the Premier League champions this summer.

His permanent deal to Huddersfield last summer included a £20m buy-back option and according to sources at ESPN, Manchester City might mull over activating that if things don’t go as planned in the transfer market this summer.
