Reports: Arsenal eyeing a stunning swoop for World Cup winning star

Arsenal have been stunningly linked with a move for Mario Gotze this summer. The Borussia Dortmund superstar has been a subject of some keen interest from a host of clubs in recent weeks, with just two years remaining on his current contract.

Mario Gotze, who was once referred to as the next big thing not just in Germany but in European football, has found life hard since leaving Borussia Dortmund for Bayern Munich in the summer of 2013. Following to his big-money move to Bavaria, the native of Munchen failed to establish himself as a key fixture in the Bayern starting eleven.

During with three-year stint with Bayern, Gotze made 114 appearances in all competition, most of which came from the bench. Despite scoring the winning goal for Germany in the 2014 World Cup final, Gotze was still deemed as a huge failure at Bayern before he returned to Dortmund in 2015.

Since returning to the Ruhrpott, Gotze has shown flashes of his former self but his overall gameplay has taken a huge dip, largely due to his muscular disease. He is no more a dynamic midfielder who can make things happen with his sublime skillset. Instead, Gotze has evolved as a more hard-working individual, who now operates from a deeper position and use his technical abilities to create chances for the attacker up front.

The German international was widely used as a central midfielder by Dortmund throughout the course of last season and his performances weren’t disappointing at all. Therefore, Mario Gotze is definitely a viable target for Arsenal.

Following the departure of the legendary Arsene Wenger, the Gunners are expected to undergo a transfer overhaul this summer under newly appointed head coach Unai Emery. The Spaniard has already stressed the need of new defenders and midfielder, having already signed Stephan Lichtsteiner last month.

And speaking of midfielders, Mario Gotze could be an exciting addition to Arsenal as they look to make a statement next season. Reports have been rife regarding the possible exit of Jack Wilshere while Santi Cazorla also face an uncertain future after missing a chunk of last season through injury. Therefore, the acquisition of this highly talented midfield could revitalize Arsenal’s midfield department next season.

However, that being said, it’s very unlikely that Mario Gotze would like to move out of Dortmund anytime soon. Since his return to Westfalenstadion, BVB fans have surprisingly embraced their prodigal son and Gotze, himself, has acknowledged the sheer love he has received from the fans. Considering the fact that he was one of Dortmund’s best players last season, chances are high that the Bundesliga giants will come up with a contract extension for the German international in nigh future.
