Recent reports from Spanish media suggest that Premier League giants West Ham United are interested in the services of Miguel Layun.
According to a report from Marca, the Hammers are vying for the signature of the Mexico International, whose currently on loan at Sevilla from his parent club FC Porto. Layun is currently contracted to the Spanish giants till the end of the season but it looks as though his future with Porto might be in a shade of doubt, especially with his current contract expiring at the end of next season.
After moving to Sevilla last summer, the Mexican has found life difficult in Spain, making just 13 appearances in La Liga. Due to the presence of Sergio Escudero, the former Watford defender has fallen down the pecking order in Joaquin Caparros’ Sevilla squad this season.
Although the left-back was deemed as a flop when he failed to make an impact in the Premier League during his short stint with Watford, Layun might once again be presented with the opportunity to prove himself in the English top flight, with both Newcastle United and West Ham reportedly vying for his signature.
Widely regarded as the best left-back in North America, Layun could be an exciting addition to West Ham United, in particular, as they look to make their mark in the Premier League next season.
The London giants, who earlier signed former Manchester United and French national team veteran Patrice Evra in January have somewhat lacked the depth in the left-back position, especially after Aaron Cresswell has shifted into a more attacking role. Although head coach David Moyes will have the option to go with Arthur Masuaku on the left flank, playing someone like Miguel Layun would be a massive upgrade in that particular department.
At 29 years of age, he has ample amount of experience of playing top-level football, which will definitely help his cause while his previous exposure could also prove to be useful for the star defender. Layun has also shown his qualities on the international stage as well, being the only bright spot in an otherwise dull Mexico roster, who will be bracing themselves for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
There’s no doubt that Miguel Layun is one of the most gifted North American footballers in the current generation. His creativity and dynamism, as well as his versatility in the backline, would definitely help West Ham become more stable in the defensive department. Therefore, he would be a welcome addition to the Hammers this summer.
