Premier League giants West Ham United are weighing up a move for FC Barcelona’s Marlon Santos. The defensive starlet, currently on loan to OGC Nice, has been a subject of some serious interest from the London side who are keen on strengthening their defensive department next season.

Newly appointed head coach Manuel Pellegrini has already identified the Brazilian defender as a perfect candidate for West Ham United this summer. The 22-year-old had an outstanding season on loan at Nice this season and was watched closely by Leicester City throughout the course of the campaign.

Marlon was initially a part of the Barcelona B squad before he was promoted to the first team, following a loan spell at Fluminense. However, after failing to get regular game-time, the Brazilian was shipped off to OGC Nice, which proved out to be a turning point in his career.

The 22-year-old has established himself as a key player for Les Aiglons, featuring in 23 games this season. He has built a formidable partnership alongside Maxime Le Marchand in central defence, which has helped them remain solid throughout the campaign.

Even in the early days of his professional career, Marlon Santos was regarded as one of the hottest prospects in Brazilian football. The native from Duque de Caxias has also featured for his country’s U-20 and U23 sides. With the U-20s, the defender played in the 2015 World Cup where he lost to Serbia in the final.

Therefore, the Barcelona defender has definitely gathered some experience in the youth levels, prior to his move to Europe. Marlon is a smart operator in the defensive half and his play style can be compared to Brazilian superstar Thiago Silva.

After initially beginning his career as a defensive midfielder, Marlon has transformed into a very good centre-back in recent years and finally looks ready to make the next step in his career.

West Ham United, on the other hand, have struggled with their lack of defensive solidity in the past few years. Despite boasting a rather impressive squad on paper, the Hammers still lack someone who can provide some quality into their defensive line, hence making Marlon a perfect fit for the London giants.

Even though there have been some questions raised regarding Marlos’ lack of physical prowess, which may prevent him from finding his feet in the Premier League, the addition of this highly rated centre-back definitely makes sense for the Hammers as they look to make a big impact in the Premier League next season.
