Manchester United finish with a win over Watford: Player ratings

marcus rashford

Michael Carrick’s final match in his competitive career came to an end as United capped off the season with a decent 1-0 victory against Watford. Despite the fact that United were utterly inconsistent in some parts of the season, they have finished at the highest league position in the post-Fergie era.

Here, we rate the United players from the match:

Sergio Romero: 7/10

The Argentine was handed a rare start and he did not disappoint as the custodian made a couple of splendid saves at the brink of half-time which included a reflex save off Richarlison’s header from around six yards out.

Matteo Darmian: 5/10

The Italian just demonstrated again why he is so unsuitable for this United lineup. Despite being given yards of space in the opposition half at times, he failed to utilise it as his crosses were awful.

Eric Bailly: 8/10

Easily the best defender on the pitch as Bailly was top-notch today with his timely interceptions and ball-playing ability. Probably the best United defender in terms of playing the ball out from the back.

Marcos Rojo: 6/10

Rojo was booked inside the first ten minutes for a rash challenge and then he made another big mistake by gifting the possession away just inside the penalty box. He improved his performance later on by putting in crucial, well-timed tackles too. It was a game of extremes for the Argentine.

Ashley Young: 6/10

Young darted ahead to overlap and create some chances by getting in promising positions as such. He was shown a yellow card in the first fifteen minutes of the second half and hence was called off in favour of Luke Shaw as Jose wanted to avoid any risk ahead of the FA Cup finals.

Michael Carrick: 9/10

Now, you understand the class of this man’s style of play, eh? United’s attacking game flew through Carrick as the captain was at the centre of every move and controlled the tempo of the game with his own, beautiful passing range and vision. Carved open Watford’s defence with a peach of a ball to create Rashford’s goal.

Scott McTominay: 7/10

McTominay pressurized the opponents to force them to lose the ball at the centre of the park. He even displayed immense footwork and good hold-up play on a couple of occasions to drive the team ahead.

Daley Blind: 6.5/10

Blind recovered the ball well and worked the ball around in the midfield. However, he did not create anything notable of sorts to leave an impact on the game.

Alexis Sanchez: 7/10

Sanchez showed some good dribbling and ball-carrying ability in the final third. He even created a few chances but could not register an assist. The performance sort of summed up his spell at United. The fans will hope he can start better in the new season.

Juan Mata: 6/10

Mata was relentless with the possession of the ball as he tried to get into the pockets of space to release the ball at the perfect moment. He even launched a couple of counterattacks with some deft touches and good lofted balls.

Marcus Rashford: 5/10

Despite the goal, which was through a relatively easy opportunity, Rashford could have left a much better impact on the game. His touches were too heavy, and the lad needs to improve his decision-making to a huge extent in the final third.

Substitutes

Luke Shaw: 5/10

The opponents held Shaw off the ball on some occasions. However, he got into his defensive positions swiftly and hence was safer from that perspective of the game.

Ander Herrera: 5/10

Herrera was brought in to instil more energy and to provide some better defensive positioning.

Paul Pogba: N.A
