After a season without anything to show for, Jose Mourinho is now expected to make some big signing this summer. Manchester United continue to be linked with some exciting stars but one player that is turning heads at Old Trafford is Jordi Alba.
Alba now a target for Manchester United
Arguably one of the best full-backs in Europe at the moment, Alba is currently unsettled at Barcelona. His current contract expires in 2020 and though it was reported almost 18 months ago that he will be offered an extension, the Catalan giants are yet to take their first step.
This has frustrated the 29-year old and his agent has now hinted that his client is being mistreated at Camp Nou. He had some stern words about Alba’s contract situation and this dispute has seen both Manchester United and Chelsea show their interest in the player. So is Alba a decent acquisition for Manchester United?
Alba And His Record
Having lifted four La Liga titles, a Champions League title and the European Championship with Spain, the 29-year old is one of the most established and decorated defenders in the game at the moment. He is expected to be the first choice for the Spanish national side in the World Cup in Russia and was in great form for the La Liga winners last season.
He registered three goals and 12 assists in all competitions, standing as the most productive defender in top European leagues and at just 29, has a number of years at his prime still left in front of him.
Quick and athletic, with a keen understanding of the game, Alba is adept at crossing and is a pretty good attacking outlet on the left. He is constantly aware of his surroundings and is quick in his decision making and his ability to dribble past opponents and create chances for his side makes him dangerous.
At the other end, he hardly ever tries anything fancy and though is a bit weak in the air, is quick to smother danger, and can frustrate even the best of the wingers in the world.
What Does He Bring To Old Trafford
Mourinho persisted with Ashley Young as his first choice left-back for most of the recent season. He does have the likes of Luke Shaw, Daley Blind and even Matteo Darmian, all of who can play that role.
But the Italian is already on his way out of the club while the English ace has never been in the good books of Mourinho. Blind has failed to break into the first team for most of the season, making Alba the best option at left-back next season.
At 29, with quite a few titles under his belt, the Spanish international will not only bring experience to side but will also bring with him the winning mentality that is not too evident in the squad at Old Trafford at the moment.
