Midfielders are often regarded as the brains of the operation. Arguably deemed as the most important position on the pitch, the quality of the midfield department can often depict the overall performance of any team.
We will mostly focus on the central midfield position, therefore, excluding the attacking midfielders in the likes of Eden Hazard, Kevin de Bruyne, Christian Eriksen etc.
Here are the three best midfielders in the 2017/18 edition of the English Premier League.
3. Paul Pogba – Manchester United
Paul Pogba might be one of the highly scrutinized players in the league but there’s no denying the fact that the Frenchman has performed exceptionally well throughout the course of the season.
Although at times criticized due to him not living up to his hefty price tag, Paul Pogba has played a critical role in Manchester United’s season, where they have managed to finish second whilst reaching the final of the FA Cup. In short, Pogba has been a key member of United’s best season in the post-Ferguson era.
Aside from scoring six goals, the Juventus midfielder has shown immense ability, in terms of his ball distribution and intricate passing, which has indeed been a valuable asset for the Red Devils this campaign. Therefore, he clearly deserves a place in the list of Premier League’s top three midfielders this season.
2. N’Golo Kante – Chelsea FC
Chelsea have had a disastrous campaign this term, having failed to successfully defend their Premier League crown whilst also missing out on the Champions League next season. However, N’Golo has been one of the few bright sparks in an otherwise dire season for the Blues.
Despite Chelsea’s shortcomings, having lost key midfielder, Nemanja Matic, last summer, N’Golo Kante has lived up to the plate by performing on a consistent basis week in week out. An ever-present figure in the Chelsea midfield this season, Kante’s ball-winning abilities coupled with his quick movements are priceless for Antonio Conte’s side, who have largely struggled due to their lack of form this campaign.
In fact, the Premier League giants could have fallen apart if it hadn’t been for the Frenchman, who definitely packs a punch in the centre of the pitch.
1. David Silva – Manchester City
Only Kevin de Bruyne, whom we couldn’t include in this list for him being an attacking midfielder, has managed to eclipse David Silva in the Manchester City midfield this season.
Indeed! The veteran Spaniard has played a critical role in the club’s dominance of the English top flight this season, often proving to be the x-factor in the centre of the park. Although highly regarded as a quality attacking midfielder, Pep Guardiola has successfully transformed the 32-year-old as a string-puller in a slightly deeper position.
With key number eight Ilkay Gundogan out with injury for the most part of his stint with the Sky Blues, the presence of David Silva has even more important for the Catalan mastermind.
Silva’s connection with the likes of Kevin de Bruyne, Leroy Sane, Raheem Sterling and Fernandinho is mainly what led City to have an effective midfield, which is capable of dismantling even the strongest defence in the world.
