Drab draw against Everton proves Liverpool need to improve their squad depth

The Merseyside derby earlier today was one of most lowkey ones we’ve seen in quite a while. While it’s a pretty good thing if the game is well-mannered, the game earlier today showed there was a certain lack of quality and exuberance that we’ve seen in recent Merseyside derbies (which explains not a single booking during the game). Though Liverpool have had the edge, Everton have played a hand in some of the most memorable derbies.

Jurgen Klopp has done a fantastic job since taking over and there no way he can be criticised. Every summer, the club needs to take a step in the right direction and that is something Klopp has managed so far.

The German has built a squad that can beat even the best of teams and he has gradually got there with players like Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah. There is, however, the room for improvement.

Klopp’s pressing style allows the team to play on the front foot but because of the squad depth, he is heavily reliant on certain individuals who make the team tick. The presence of Roberto Firmino adds more than just goals up front; his combination play and interpretation of space cannot be replicated by any other player in the squad.

Danny Ings and Dominic Solanke are able players but when the team’s resources are stretched and they’re looking for someone who can perform a similar role like Firmino, there’s no answer.

The same can be said of their midfield. Jordan Henderson sort of divides opinion at Anfield, but in all honesty, he is the best player in his position. He will be suspended for the second clash against Manchester City and with Emre Can already put due to an injury, Liverpool could have a few problems come Tuesday.

Henderson’s impact against teams who press is pretty notable, so perhaps Klopp and co can target a player who can not only do that put is more accomplished defensively, which Henderson isn’t.

The other areas where the club needs to add a player is in the wide areas. Mane and Salah have played an awful lot of games and without their presence, the side has looked toothless.

The goals have come from the front three and the need to add depth is imperative. Liverpool will in all likelihood make it to the Champions League next season, so the upcoming summer could be crucial for the club to challenge for trophies next season.
