Shakhtar Donetsk midfielder Fred has become a hot prospect in the transfer market this season, following his incredible performances in the Ukrainian league for the past few years. And even though his current contract with the club expires in 2023, Fred is highly expected to leave Shakhtar in the upcoming summer transfer window.

A host of clubs have apparently shown massive interest in acquiring the services of the Brazilian midfielder, including the likes of Manchester United, Manchester City and Arsenal, as well as Tottenham Hotspur.

Even though both of the Manchester clubs are tipped to be the frontrunners,  Tottenham, in recent weeks, have often featured in the gossip pages and could actually try to overtake their Premier League rivals in the race to sign Fred.

The Lilywhites, despite their position in the league table, have yet again, shown incredible promise, under the leadership of head coach Mauricio Pochettino. Although the injury to Harry Kane might prove to be a huge blow at this point of the season, they are still expected to seal Champions League football next season by finishing above fifth-placed Chelsea.

That being said, head coach Mauricio Pochettino will definitely be keen to further strengthen his unit this summer. Midfield, in particular, has been somewhat edgy for the Lilywhites this season, with the likes of Victor Wanyama struggling with injury for the most part of the season while Moussa Sissoko’s unconvincing performances are often keeping him out from the squad.

Therefore, Spurs could well use the services of another midfielder next season and that’s where Fred comes into the fray.

Since joining Shakhtar in the summer of 2013, Fred has proved to be a huge success for the Ukrainian giants. The Brazilian has emerged as a key component, in the Shakhtar midfield and has apparently become a hot commodity in the transfer market, just because of his unique style of play.

Although he might not be as effective as Victor Wanyama in defensive phases, Fred is someone who can work as a catalyst in the centre of the pitch. Much like Liverpool-bound midfielder Naby Keita, Fred is a midfield workhorse, who heavily relies on his ball-carrying abilities to carry his team home.

Currently, in his fifth season with the club, Fred has shown tremendous promise in the Ukrainian top flight and at the age of just 25, the Brazilian could potentially become a key prospect for Tottenham in the coming years.
