Tottenham Hotspur are well on their way to finishing in the top-4 of the points table but it seems Mauricio Pochettino is already planning for the next season. It is evident that they need a few additions to compete with the best and scouting has already been underway.
One name on their radar now is German superstar Marco Reus.
Transfer Story:
A long-term transfer target for Merseyside outfit Liverpool, Reus is into the final year of his contract and has extensively been linked with a move to Anfield in the summer. However, it is understood that Tottenham Hotspur are also maintaining their interest in the player and could make a move at the end of the season.
Liverpool remain favourites to land him but should Spurs look to beat the Reds to his signature?
Reus And His History:
One of the most gifted players coming out of Germany, Reus started his youth career with Borussia Dortmund but only made a name for himself with Borussia Monchengladbach, before he was brought back to Signal Iduna Park in 2012. After his record of 36 goals in 97 league appearances at Borussia Park, Reus was expected to hit the ground running at Dortmund and that he did, under the guidance of now Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp.
He was a part of the Bundesliga team of the season in every season from the 2011-12 campaign but missed out on the honour last season, having failed to keep himself fit for most of the year. He also missed Germany’s World Cup triumph due to injury and is only getting back to full fitness.
He has two goals since coming back from injury this season, in five league appearances and if he can remain fit, will be a crucial part of the squad for Germany in the World Cup.
A versatile attacker, who can lead the line and play as a support striker as well as he can on either wing, Reus has great technique and is one of the most creative players in Europe at the moment. Apart from his injury history, there is very little weaknesses in his game and the lad can walk into even the best teams in Europe.
Right Man For Spurs?
The likes of Mousa Dembele, Harry Kane, Dele Alli and Christian Eriksen all make Spurs a competitive side but they still need more star players, who can decide games individually and Reus fits the bill well. At 28, he may not fit perfectly into Pochettino’s youth-oriented recruitment system but Spurs might have to start spending on proven players if they are to compete for silverware.
